"Mario, I've gotten smacked around by thugs all over the world now..."
—Travelling Toad

The Traveling Toad is a toad who traveled the world but only encountered bad luck where he went. After a total of five ambushes he decided to return home.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

A Red Toad, the Traveling Toad looks like all the other paper toads.

Personality traits[]

Despite constantly encountering bar luck, he remains determined to continue his adventure. He is gracious, always thanking Mario when rescued and rewarding him with various Stickers and Things. Despite this, he isn't modest in his postcards home, claiming he did everything Mario did. Later, however, he comes clean and tells his 'Bud' the Truth.

Biography[]

World 1[]

The Traveling Toad is first encountered in Bouquet Gardens, where he is being harassed by a 2-Fold Goomba. They give Mario the option to pay 20 Coins or to leave. Mario can also choose to attack them. As a reward, the Toad will give Mario the Cat-O-Luck Thing. After being saved he sent a postcard back home to his 'Bud'.

"Dear Bud,

My journey is fraught with danger. I was lately accosted by some flimsy Goombas bent on mischief, but I dispatched them with ease.

They cried, "Forgive us, mighty Toad!" and left me 20 coins. Satisfactory! Pray tell, what is better than a coin well earned with knuckles? Naught!

In any case, my journey continues. Will write when circumstances permit."

World 2[]

Mario will find him again in the Drybake Desert. Once again he is being bullied, though this time by five Goombas (who turn into a 5-Fold Goomba if attacked). Mario has to either pay 25 Coins or fight them in order to get then to leave the Travelling Toad alone. He will reward Mario with a Shiny Mushroom. After this, he sent back another postcard.

"Dear Bud,

In the unrelenting heat of the desert, tensions mount and the spirit quails. Yet this Toad presses on! Huzzah!

The comforting strums of guitars seem omnipresent, a pleasing backdrop to the shimmering vistas of both pyramid and sphinx. All melts into a mirage dream.

As I trod the sands, I treated some local children to a cold beverage. How lovely such chance meetings are! We are all strangers in a strange world!

Much as I would love to linger here, I must journey on. Until I write again..."

World 3[]

As Mario progressed through Holey Thicket, he found the Toad in peril once more. This time it was two Bloopers who were the bullies. They demanded 50 coins in exchange for the Travelling Toad's freedom, but Mario could also decide to do battle with them. After causing the two bloopers to leave, the Toad rewarded Mario once more with a Shiny Mushroom. Yet again, the Toad sent another postcard.

"Dear Bud,

My ears, once clogged with the words of men, now hear all. If one listens closely, one can hear the voice of the woods.

I had tired of the hubbub of town life. I had come to wonder, what is a Toad? And so I embarked on this epic journey. Yes, a journey to find myself.

I've come to realize that a Toad must learn his limits. He must dispose of his worldly desires. And most of all, he must be content with his inner Toad.

My inner Toad is more than content. He is mighty. Poison surrounds me, but I fear not its acid bite. I shall donate my Shiny Mushroom sticker to one in need.

My great journey of self-discovery continues. I will write soon."

World 4[]

When Mario entered Bowser's Snow Fort he could immediately see two Shy Guys harrassing the Toad. After making his way over to confront the villains, he was presented with the opportunity to either pay 100 Coins or do battle. After the Shy Guys left, the Toad rewarded Mario with a Secret Door. As always, he sent a postcard home.

"Dear Bud,

My body, this crude vessel, is so cold...but my spirit is ablaze.

So many attractions command my eye. Such a wealth of entertainment calls to me that I quite lose track of time.

The tickets are rather on the expensive side, but the visions I have witnessed are worth any price.

I cannot tarry, however. A land of pure, untamed wilderness lies ahead of me. Pray tell, what chance encounters lie in wait for me there?

The mountains rise up to greet me as I set out on the next leg of my journey. Until next time."

—The Traveling Toad's fourth postcard

World 5[]

Once Mario completed his trip down Jungle Rapids and explored the area further, he finds the Travelling Toad in peril once more. The bullies are two Spear Guys, who want a staggering 500 Coins in exchange for the Toads freedom. After taking care of them, the Toad decides to return home and give up on travelling. He decides to go home, but not before giving Mario a HP-Up Heart and sending a final postcard.

"Dear Bud...

Confession time: I've been getting whupped up and down two continents, and I've been saved time and again by a fellow traveler.

Those whuppings opened my eyes, bud.

And I know now my mission in life. I've got to do my part to help Princess Peach! She needs us all to try our best!

I have no idea if I'll make it back in time to help revive the Sticker Fest, but I'll try my darnedest! I'll make the princess proud if it's the last thing I do!

Until then, I remain your bud."

—The Travelling Toad's Final Postcard

Trivia[]

  • If Mario returns to the home of the Toad (furthest on the right in Decalburg) he can read the postcards out loud to his 'Bud'. After reading all five the 'Bud' cries and gives Mario a HP-Up Heart.
