Dark Land is the home of Koopa Troop, part of the Koopa Kingdom, and the final world in Super Mario Bros. 3. It is a part of the Mushroom World continent that has volcanoes, which produce smoke and block out the sun's light. This is where Bowser's Castle is located. In the game, Mario had to defeat most of the Koopa Troop to reach and defeat Bowser in his castle to rescue Princess Peach.
