Super Mario Mario Party

Fences, are a climbable surface which appear in some Mario games, especially the Super Mario series. They first appear in Super Mario World.

Description[]

A Fence consists of several metal bars interlocked diagonally. Mario or another character can grab onto the bars and climb around, generally to reach a higher area but sometimes also to move across a hazard such as lava. Fences have two sides, and in the 2D Super Mario series games, Climbing Koopas can often be found climbing around on Fences, with the ability to climb over from one side to the either either horizontally or vertically. A character can punch a Fence while climbing around on it, usually to attack a Climbing Koopa, but some Fences have a panel that can be punched to flip the character over to the opposite side.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario World[]

Fences first appear in Super Mario World. In this game, they are found in some Castle levels Fences are first found in Iggy's Castle of Yoshi's Island. Aside from Fences, the game also marks the debut of Climbing Koopas, which Mario and Luigi often find on a Fence, as well as panels.

Super Mario Sunshine[]

While Fences don't appear in Super Mario Sunshine, a similar climbable object called the Chain-Link did.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Similar to Super Mario World, Fences return to being obstacles in Fortresses and Castles. They are used in the same manner as in Super Mario World. A yellow fence is also used in the minigame Power-Up Panels.

In Mario Party 9[]

A Fence is featured within the Bowser Jr. minigame Cage Match, in which it is heavily based on its appearance from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The object is for the player's character to climb around the fence to try and catch Bowser Jr..
