Luigi's Mansion

A fake door, also known as a trapdoor or false door, is a recurring object in the Luigi's Mansion series. They first appear in Luigi's Mansion for Nintendo GameCube and return in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and the ScareScraper for Luigi's Mansion 3.

Description[]

Fake doors are a trap that resemble real doors, hence their name, and their design is presumably intended to trick Luigi into using them. If Luigi turns the knob of a fake door, it springs open and flattens Luigi against the wall.

Fake doors are found in various locations on different floors of the mansion, mainly in the hallways. Opening a fake door causes Luigi to lose ten HP and a few coins. A ghost can be heard laughing after Luigi is smashed, even if the lights are on. Sometimes, a trail of conveniently placed coins leads straight to a fake door to catch Luigi off guard.

A fake door can only be destroyed by using the effects of the Fire Elemental Ghost to set the fake door on fire, then it disappears shortly after. However, a fake door can respawn when Luigi enters two different rooms away from it and then re-entering. Somehow, unlike fake doors, the actual doors cannot be put on fire. There are more fake doors during the blackout, but after the event concludes, these additional fake doors disappear.

There are a few ways to distinguish fake doors from an actual doors. The most evident is when Luigi uses his Poltergust 3000 on a fake door, as it does not rattle, unlike actual doors. Fake doors also do not appear in the Game Boy Horror's camera function. Fake doors also do not have a doormat in front of them, unlike most of the actual doors.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon[]

False doors appear in the Gloomy Manor, Haunted Towers, Treacherous Mansion, and ScareScraper. False doors retain their main function from Luigi's Mansion, but deal less damage to Luigi than before: five HP in the main game and two HP in the ScareScraper, and Luigi does not drop any coins upon being squished either. Luigi can use his map on the Dual Scream to distinguish between false doors and actual doors. Another difference from the first game is that a ghost's laughter does not play when Luigi is hit by a false door, aside from one instance in the Treacherous Mansion when a Greenie appears to laugh at Luigi. Unlike in Luigi's Mansion, false doors cannot be destroyed.

Luigi's Mansion 3[]

Fake doors exclusively appear in ScareScraper mode, unlike their previous incarnations. They also have to be destroyed by using the Suction Shot. A difference from before is that whenever a fake door traps Luigi, it does not close, forcing another character to use the Suction Shot to destroy the fake door.
