"Full Extension!"
—The Extension Corps prepare to fight the Bros. for the last time in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

The Extension Corps are the lieutenants of the Zokket Army and are the secondary antagonists in the upcoming Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Profile[]

Physical Appearance[]

The Extension Corps' members take their design from electrical connectors. One member who resembles a headphone jack has a purple and lanky body, with his head resembling a male connector and one of his arms and both his legs resembling female connectors; this one is called "Ten." Shun, another member who resembles a VGA connector, has a green and blue stout body, and his mouth is located just above his chest with yellow lips. The pink member, Ecks, seems to have no legs with his method of locomotion being flight, and has arms resembling coaxial cables or spade connectors, a purple horn on his head, and a mouth with grey lips and yellow teeth, and he wears a cape.

Powers[]

Ecks is shown with the ability to fly to make up for his leglessness; as such, he doesn't ride a Snaptor when the group flies. Ten can generate energy balls from the arm cannon on his right arm, with some being big enough to ride on. Shun is the strongest member physically, and can summon dumbbells and barbells from nowhere.

History[]

Ten is the first member to be seen, being carried by a Snaptor in a cutscene after the Gorumbla is defeated.

The trio are later seen in the Great Lighthouse of the Lushgreen Sea, where the Gobblick is being fed Spite Bulbs (a hostile variant of Sprite Bulb that has been cut off from Connectar). When Shun is about to explain the trio's plan, Ecks decides that the Gobblick can just fight the Bros. instead. Ecks flees the scene with his cohorts, claiming that the Extension Corps has more important business ("a bigger fish to zap" in his words).

The trio have their names revealed during the Bros.' visit Desolatt Island, where they and Lord Zokket discuss what to do when confronted. As Zokket makes his leave, Ten fights the Bros., but gets thrashed and flees, dropping his Battle Plugs which the Bros. promptly steal.

Mario and Luigi later encounter the trio in the Great Lighthouse of the Color-Full Sea, where Ecks summons the Sharpcask. Mario and Luigi promptly defeat the creature, however.

Later, in the Brrning Sea Lighthouse, the trio and Zokket are confronted. When Zokket voices his disappointment over the trio's failure, Shun takes his turn, summoning the Pipegunk, only for the Bros. to destroy the creature.

During the second assault on Zokket's fortress, the trio separates the Bros. but later fights them in a three-on-two combat after the Bros. reunite. Upon defeat, the trio quits working for the Zokket Army, which is later dismantled after Zokket meets his own demise courtesy of Reclusa's rampage.

Combat[]

Ten is the only member of the group to be fought solo. In combat, Ten has the ability to make balls of energy and ride them to ram the Bros.; his charge attack can be blocked by smacking the ball with a Hammer strike. He can also summon five mirrors surrounding the Bros. and fire shots at the mirrors, with the shots rebounding into the Bros. eventually. These must also be repelled with hammer strikes. He can also summon Snaptors to his side and have them carry objects that must be dodged. Ten is a Level 14 enemy with around 700 hit points, with his defeat netting 450 Experience and his loot drop being 189 Coins, a set of Sturdy Wear[1][2], a Kaboom Attack Battle Plug, and an Easy-Peasy Counters Battle Plug.

During the battle versus the trio within Fortress Zokket, all three members go up against the Bros. Ten retains his energy ball ride and mirror attack from his first fight, but replaces his Snaptor attack with three new attacks: a simple straightforward shot, a connector head smash, and an energy saber slash. All three must be countered with the hammer. Ecks uses high-speed attacks, with his first being similar to that of the Spritzbloom, jumping to random spots and charging an electric attack; this must be countered with a hammer strike. Another attack is a dash attack from behind that must be jumped over. If Ecks' attacks make their mark, an active Battle Plug may be stolen, which causes that Battle Plug to become unusable for the rest of the battle. Shun attacks by weightlifting, throwing his barbell at the Bros; this must be jumped over.

At low health, the trio will gain a combo move where Ten shoots energy balls from his arm cannon, Ecks dashes into his prey from the side, and Shun punches a punching bag. (Mario and Luigi must jump over the former two and use hammer strikes to block the lattermost.)

Shun also uses his own Battle Plugs, which include the following:

  • HUUUGE Iron Ball: Failure to block the Extension Corps' weapons will result in a massive spiked ball falling on a Mario Bro., who has to use a hammer strike to repel it.
  • Theme Song: All three members dance to music, boosting their stats.
  • PunishMush: Eating Mushrooms causes damage. However, Nuts function normally.
  • Single-Minded: All three members share a health pool.
  • Invincible: All three members turn invincible for several turns. After the last turn in this state, a powerful fiery explosion engulfs the battlefield, damaging the Bros. and defeating the trio. The explosion cannot be avoided by conventional means, but can be blocked with Emergency Guard.

Quotes[]

"The three of us have a bigger fish to zap. (Evil laughter)"
—When the Gobblick prepares to attack.

Behind the Scenes[]

Etymology[]

The name of the group comes from the term "Extension Cord." The individual members' names form a pun on "Extension."

Nomenclature[]

In Japanese, the Extension Corps is called the "Voldoldo Squad" (Borudoru Tai; written ボルドルド 隊, or ボルドルド たい in Hiragana and ボルドルド タイ in Katakana; derived from boruto (bolt; written ボルト) undergoing duplication and a change from T to D). In the Spanish dub, the members are called the "Extension Cord Commandos" ((Los) Comandos Alargadores; singular Comando Alargador). In the Portuguese dub, the group is called "O Batalhão de Extensão" ("Battalion of Extension"). In Italian, they are called "Skonnettieri" (singular Skonnettiero); a corruption of (di)sconnéttere ("to disconnect") and guerriero ("warrior"). French translates their name as (Les) Disjoncteurs, which means "Circuit Breakers" (singular Disjoncteur). The group's German name is Ausfall-Brigade (literally "brigade of outages," presumably referring to power outages). In Dutch, the Extension Corps is called the "Extension Group" (Extensiegroep), again referring to "extension cords."

Ecks bears the name Borudō in the Japanese dub (written ボルドー), forming a pun on "volt" and the name "Bordeaux"; additionally, the first syllable of his name there combines with those of Ten's and Shun's names to form a pun on "volt" as well. His Spanish name is Alar, combining with his cronies' names (Arga (Ten) and Dor (Shun)) from "Alargador" ("extension cord"); in a similar vein, his Portuguese name, Coné, forms a pun on the word conexão ("connection") with the other two members' names (Gui (Ten) and Zão (Shun)). In Italian, his name is Ohmar, a deliberate misspelling of Omar to reference ohms (a unit of electrical resistance). French translates his name as "Diss," which combines with Ten & Shun's French names (Jonk and Terr) to form a pun on disjoncteur, which refers to a circuit breaker. In German, Ecks' name is translated as "Drahtus," forming a pun on Draht ("wire").

Ten is called "Rudorufu" in the Japanese dub (transliteration of "Rudolph"; written ルドルフ), with the first syllable of his name joining with first syllables of Ecks' and Shun's names to form a pun on "bolt." His Spanish name, Arga, likewise joins with Ecks' and Shun's names (Alar and Gador) to form a pun on "Alargador" ("extension cord"). His Portuguese name, "Gui," is derived from the name Guilherme ("William"), while also forming a facsimile of conexão ("connection") with Ecks' and Shun's names in that language, while his French name, Jonk, forms a facsimile on "disjoncteur" with Ecks' and Shun's names. Italian breaks this trend with Ten's name being translated as "Volter" (a pun on "Walter" and volto, which can mean "volt").

Shun shares the same naming scheme that his cronies do; in Japanese, his name is "Todd," transliterated as "Toddo" (written トッド), and the first syllable of the name forms a pun on "volt" alongside those of Ecks' and Ten's names. His Spanish name is "Gador," which helps form a pun on alargador with the other two's names. In Portuguese, Shun is called "Zão," forming a pun on conexão ("connection") with Ecks' and Ten's names, which are "Coné" and "Gui," respectively. French translates his name as "Terr," forming a facsimile of disjoncteur ("circuit breaker") alongside "Diss" (Ecks) and "Jonk" (Ten). As with Ecks and ten's names, Italian breaks the trend of forming puns by translating Shun's name as "Ampier," a pun on "ampere" and Piero.
