An emblem is a symbol used to represent a certain character, usually on an item belonging to them or a scoreboard display. Some games feature them more prominently than others, such as Mario Kart DS, in which the player can design a custom emblem for the characters to use on their karts. The star of the Mario franchise, Mario has a red "M" as his emblem, originating from the front of his cap, and is often displayed on a white backdrop.
The Mario & Sonic series gives Sonic the Hedgehog characters each their own emblem, just like each of the Mario characters have, and the spectators can often be seen waving a flag of a character's emblem in the background.
