“Elvin Lives” is the thirty-ninth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. It is paired with the live-action segment "Home Radio."
Plot[]
Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad arrive in Sock Hop Land hoping that Elvin Parsley, the King of Music, will help them against King Koopa. Unfortunately, when they get there, they discover that Elvin has disappeared and Koopa the Cool (King Koopa's alias during the episode), has declared himself the king. Having a gang of Goombas and a hot rod he believes that all he needs now is a steady girlfriend. He elects the Princess for the position. After a brief chase the Marios manage to drive Koopa the Cool off and escape.
Learning of King Koopa's latest scheme they decide to check out Elvin's home, Parsley Land. In his house they find pictures and statues of Elvin but not the man himself. Just then, they hear a pounding on a door. Upon opening the door they find a pair of living shoes, which are identified as Parsley's Blue Suede Shoes. The shoes know where Elvin is and lead the Marios to the Malt Shop.
At the Malt Shop, the Mario Brothers and Toad pretend to be a band and distract the Goombas with their horrible music. While the Goombas are unable to act, the Princess follows the shoes to the freezer, finding that Elvin has been frozen. The shoes claim that she only has to put them onto Elvin's feet and he'll live again. However, just before the Princess can put the shoes on Elvin, Koopa the Cool shows up and kidnaps her. The shoes inform the Marios of what just when on alerting not only the Marios of the trouble but the Goombas and Koopa the Cool of the Marios being in the Malt Shop. The Marios just barely manage to escape.
With the Princess captured and King Koopa on the move Mario decides the only way for the group to get him is to get a hot rod of their own. Finding an old car, they get to work rebuilding it. After a short time, the new car is built and they manage to catch up with Koopa the Cool. Their vehicle is faster and they re-take the Princess. Unfortunately, the Goombas cut them off and destroy their car. Fortunately, they land in a patch of Fire Flowers. Mario and Luigi both go Super, defeat the Goombas, and Mario distracts Koopa the Cool from his driving. Forgetting to steer, Koopa the Cool goes flying off a cliff.
Now that Koopa the Cool is no longer a problem the Marios return the shoes to Elvin. He is instantly restored and goes up on stage. Mario wonders out loud if he could join in on the act: an idea that is instantly rejected.
Trivia/Goofs[]
- Elvin Parsley is a parody of Elvis Presley, but when Elvin speaks, his voice sounds closer to James Brown's.
- This episode marks the first time a Goomba is shown being able to speak.
- Living shoes imbuing the wearer with power was also seen in the MC Hammer cartoon Hammerman.
- The Blue Suede Shoes are a reference to the popular song of the same name.
- The characters claim that Elvin is turned to stone but it looks more like he's frozen, especially since he's stored in a freezer.
- When the characters enter Elvin's mansion, the intro for "Jailhouse Rock" starts playing.
- When Koopa takes Princess Toadstool away, she does not have a month.
