The Earth Vellumental (土ガミ, Tsuchi-gami?, Earth God) is a boss in Paper Mario: The Origami King. He has the power to manipulate the Earth. The Earth Vellumental makes his lair within the Earth Vellumental Temple within Picnic Road, having been folded by King Olly into Origami in the early events of the game.
After she and Paper Mario defeat him, Olivia can learn the Vellumental's folding techniques, and be able to transform into her version of the Earth Vellumental.
According to the legends, the Earth Vellumental is known as the spirit of the dirt. he lives in the cave known as the Earth Vellumental Temple. The Earth Vellumental is a mighty spirit with the power to lift the ground. "Koopa Troopas venerate him via pilgrimage and gifts".[1]
Profile[]
Physical appearance[]
The Earth Vellumental is an origami tortoise. He has four yellow legs, a yellow head and tail, and a green shell with a white bottom.
His head, legs and tails are his weak spots. Mario can attack them with his hammer abilities, then flip the Vellumental to render him vulnerable to other attacks.
Defeating the Vellumental drops an Earth Bibliofold, which allows Olivia to learn how to fold into an Earth Vellumental.
Abilities[]
Full version[]
- Retract - When a vulnerable body part is attacked, the Earth Vellumental retracts that body part into his shell. His movement pattern changes based on what part was hit. If the head is attacked, he goes to Head Attacked state. If the tail is attacked, he goes to Tail Attacked state.
- Sandblast - Deals damage to Mario thrice, each time he knocks Mario further to the outer rings. It would keep spamming this ability in this state. The damage is a random number from 5-8, but getting closer makes higher numbers more likely.
Head attacked[]
- Earthquake - Deals damage to Mario once, and occurs when the Vellumental's head is retracted, but a least one leg is not.
Head and all legs attacked[]
- Retract - When a vulnerable body part gets attacked, it retracts that body part into his shell. If the body part is tail, it goes to Tail Attacked state.
- Tremor Tail - It attacks using his tail, dealing damage in one turn, knocking Mario out of the ring.
Tail Attacked[]
When the Earth Vellumental enters this state, he retracts all of his vulnerable body parts into the shell. This state is vulnerable to 1,000-Fold Arms.
- Rough Landing - The Earth Vellumental does a Rough Landing, dealing damage one time, knocking Mario out of the ring. It does this attack the 1st turn in this state.
- Mega Earthquake - The Earth Vellumental does an extremly powerful attack, but the attack takes one turn to charge up.
Combat[]
Phase 1[]
At the beginning of the first turn, Olivia instructs Mario how to battle in boss battles. There are 5 arrows, and Mario has 60 seconds and two turn moves to rotate the rings. Two of the arrows point inwards, while two point right, and one points left. There is also one arrow that point backwards. There is one Action Panel. The Earth Vellumental's 1st attack is a Sand Blast. After the first turn. there are many more arrows and Action Panels, along will some hearts, letters, chest, and 2x attacks. If Mario fails to line up the rings correctly, then he will return to the start of the round and try again.
If you lose, and when you return, say no for boss battle instructions, then the first turn will be exactly the same, except that Mario has three turn moves.
During the first phase, the Earth Vellumental will use Sandblast on his turn. It has six different body part outside of his shell: the head, the four legs, and the tail. Mario can use hammer attacks on the right angle to attack the exposed body parts, however this does little damage unless the Tail is struck.
When a vulnerable body part is attacked, the Earth Vellumental retracts that body part, making it no longer vulnerable from attacks from that angle. If the head is attacked, Earth Vellumnetal enter his optional state in Phase 1.5. If all body parts but the tail are retracted then it will enter his optional state in Phase 1.75. If the tail is attacked, Earth Vellumental enters Phase 2.
If the head is retracted at any point during Phase 1 then the Earth Vellumental will use Earthquake, with one of his extended legs.
Phase 1.5[]
During this phase, the Earth Vellumental will use Earthquake with one of his extended legs. If all of his legs are retracted then he will proceed to Phase 1.75. If the Vellumental's tail is attacked then it will proceed to Phase 2.
Phase 1.75[]
During this phase, the Earth Vellumental will use Tremor Tail on his turns. He keeps his current vulnerable body parts and mechanic. If the tail is attacked, Earth Vellumnetal enters his final state in Phase 2. The tail will also turn to face Mario, during his turn phase. Also during this phase, the tail is lined up with Mario making it easy to perform an attack against it.
Phase 2[]
When the tail is attacked, the Earth Vellumental will first retract all of his body parts. This state is invulnerable to Mario's Boot and Hammers attacks, but vulnerable to 1,000-Fold Arms. During this phase, a 1,000-Fold Arms Magic Circle will always appear on a panel.
In this phase, Earth Vellumental will use Rough Landing on the 1st turn after being struck in the tail, and if Mario fails to use the Magic Circle, then the Earth Vellumental will attack every other turn using Mega Earthquake. This attack deals a lot of damage, generally around 22-36 HP. This attack deals a lot of damage, generally around 22-36 HP. This attack deals a lot of damage, generally around 22-36 HP.
When Mario uses the Arms ability, he first flips the Vellumental upside down, exposing his vulnerable bottom part of his shell. Mario can then spam slamming attacks, dealing lethal damage.
Phase 3[]
This phase is after the 1st time Mario uses the 1000-Fold Arms to attack the Earth Vellumental. From now on, Mario must first activate the ON panel to activate the Magic Circles. The Earth Vellumental also pops out some limbs and his head after every 1000-Fold Arms attacks, and regains a portion of his HP. He will return to Phase 1 until his tail is hit. After this, the battle will proceed to Phase 2. This repeats for every time Mario performs the 1000-Fold Arms attack and does not succeed in defeating the Earth Vellumental that round.
In Game Hints[]
"The Earth Vellumental's tail is its weak spot. A successful hit will make it fully retract into its shell!"
"When it's retreated into its shell, that's your chance to flip it over with the 1,000-Fold Arms!"
"The Earth Vellumental's shell is super sturdy. Jump attacks will always bounce right off of it. Aim for its exposed limbs instead. Get up close and personal with your hammer!"
King Olly's Version[]
During the first phase of his battle, King Olly can transform into a Vellumental, with the Earth Vellumental being one of them. In this form, he will immediately charge up to use Mega Quake on the next turn. Paper Mario has to make Olivia take the form and powers of the Ice Vellumental to freeze Olly, rendering the Origami King with no actions available but to say "Curses! I can't move!" Paper Mario can attack him with the 1,000-Fold Arms, flipping Olly over akin to the Scissors (if Olivia froze Olly) and then attacking him; if Paper Mario is successful, King Olly will revert back to his regular form.
