Durians are a type of object which first appear in Super Mario Sunshine.
Description[]
Durians are tanned, spiky fruit from the real world, where they are native to countries within Southeast Asia. Their depiction in the Mario franchise is no different than in real life, aside from being less heavy, but Durians do have unique roles in gameplay.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario Sunshine[]
A Durian is one of the many types of fruit that can be given to a Yoshi Egg for a Yoshi to hatch from it. When the Yoshi eats a durian, he changes to purple, a color that Peppers also change him into.
Unlike most other types of fruit, durians cannot be picked up by Mario and carried, but only kicked around, an action that FLUDD compares to kicking a soccer ball, despite Durians being a lot heavier than soccer balls in real life. The game has an unused test area titled "test11," where a soccer ball, which is an unused object itself, can be kicked and used exactly in the manner of a durian.
A Pianta lady on the other side of the pool in Delfino Plaza will reward Mario with a Blue Coin for getting three durians into her basket.
The Yoshi Egg in Ricco Harbor can only be fed a Durian.
Super Mario Odyssey[]
While fighting Cookatiel in a rematch, one of its attacks is spitting out durians.
In Mario Party DS[]
Durians appear in the boss minigame, Hexoskeleton. Here, after Dry Bones has been hit twice, it starts performing a Ground Pound, creating a force that may cause a durian to drop on the stage. If a Dry Bones ground-pounds a Durian, he becomes stunned for a few seconds.
The Boss Trophy associated with Hexoskeleton is "Delicious Durian," which depicts a durian.
In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[]
Exclusively in the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch versions, Cookatiel spits out Durians to attack in its boss stage, Cookatiel's Sizzling Sprint, just like in Super Mario Sunshine.
