Duck Hunt, also known as the Duck Hunt Duo, is a duo from the game Duck Hunt. They are individually referred to as Dog and Duck, after their respective real-world species, with the latter being a character representative of the Duck Hunt species of the same name.

Duck Hunt make their first Mario-related appearance in Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt, specifically within the re-release of Duck Hunt, but their first direct appearance within a Mario-related game is WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!. The first game to pair Dog and Duck as a duo is Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.

Given that Duck Hunt did not spawn any sequels or a series of its own, several of Duck Hunt's later appearances depict them in their original sprite-based form from Duck Hunt, with the Super Smash Bros. series being a notable exception.

Background information[]

Throughout Duck Hunt, the goal is to shoot all of the ducks with a limited amount of bullets and time. By plugging a controller into the player 2 slot into the Nintendo Entertainment System, a duck can be controlled to a limited extent by another player.

The hunter is the playable character in all versions of Duck Hunt and is supposed to represent the player. Accompanying the player is a non-playable scent hound, who flushes out the ducks for the hunter to shoot and picks up any ducks that are shot down by the player. If the player fails to shoot down any ducks, the dog infamously laughs at the player's misfortune before slinking back down into the grass.

Although the home console version of Duck Hunt does not allow players to shoot the dog, the arcade version, Vs. Duck Hunt, actually allows players to do so in the bonus rounds. However, shooting the dog immediately ends the bonus round and yields no points.

In WarioWare series[]

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$![]

The Dog and some Ducks appear in the microgame Duck Hunt. Like the original game, the player has to shoot a Duck, although the Dog is immediately seen holding it right after doing so. The Dog and Duck both have their graphics reused from Duck Hunt.

WarioWare: Twisted![]

The Dog and some Ducks appear in another microgame named Duck Hunt. It is similar to the one in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! but this time utilizes the game cartridge's tilt sensor to aim. Just as before, the Dog and Duck are depicted with their sprites from Duck Hunt.

WarioWare: Touched![]

Ducks, retaining their original sprite appearance from Duck Hunt, are occasionally released from the ball in the microgame Clawing for More after clearing it.

WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase[]

The Dog and some Ducks appear in the Duck Hunt microgame. It plays like the microgame from WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! but utilizes the Wii Remote's motion controls for aiming.
