Dragon Coins, also known as Yoshi Coins, are a collectible item featured in Super Mario World and Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2. They are oval-shaped gold coins featuring the likeness of Yoshi.

In Super Mario World[]

Collecting five or more Dragon Coin in a single level grants Mario an additional life. Most levels in the games have five Dragon Coins in them, but some Castles and Ghost Houses, for example, have none. There are also some levels with many Dragon Coins, such as the Cheese Bridge Area, with ten. However, it is possible to collect only nine of them. Each time a Dragon Coin is collected, the player earns 1,000 points.

In Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, more levels have Dragon Coins. The overworld now has its own menu keeping track of level progress as well as how many Dragon Coins were collected in each level. Once every Dragon Coin has been collected, they instead depict the likeness of Princess Peach.

Trivia[]

  • Once five are collected in a level, going through a pipe or door (or completing the level, or losing a life) to a different area of the level causes any remaining Coins to vanish. This is why all the Cheese Bridge Area Coins cannot be collected in one visit to the level.
  • Dragon Coins would have made a return in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, but were scrapped in favor of Smiley Flowers.
