The Doom Bloom is an enemy from Mario & Luigi: Brothership. They first appear when Reclusa awakens, where they form the Soli-Tree, which it uses as its fortress, in the remains of Zokket's fortress. During the final battle, Doom Blooms aid the fiend as backup.
Description[]
Doom Blooms have red petals around their head, which has a greyish-white beak with sharp "teeth," and a black stem. Their body resembles a wire.
Behaviour[]
During the first phase of the final battle, Mario and Luigi have to avoid Doom Blooms as they chase after Reclusa on a plug-shaped hoverboard; if they collide with a Doom Bloom, the Bros. are forced to battle the Doom Bloom. During the second phase, four of them have to be dealt with, with one capturing Snoutlet and all four trading him. After the Bros. free Snoutlet, Luigi can use his Luigi Logic to flee from the Doom Blooms on another plug-shaped hoverboard created by Snoutlet and go after the fiend itself.
Combat[]
Doom Blooms have two attacks. Their first attack is a bite, which has to be avoided by jumping over them. However, some Doom Blooms will squawk prior to the bite attack; these ones must be ducked under, which requires no input. In their second attack, Doom Blooms spit out fireballs or magic snowballs, which must be repelled with a hammer strike.
Doom Blooms can only be encountered during the final battle, so they lack overworld sprites (apart from the cutscene where they are summoned to create the Soli-Tree and when they abduct Snoutlet). During the first phase of the final battle, they are of Level 44, with 632 hit points, an attack power of 270, a defense of 194, and a speed of 170. During the Weeping Reclusa phase, they are of Level 45, with 2256 hit points, an attack power of 263, a defense of 203, and a speed of 55. Their presence in the final battle prevents them from yielding experience or loot when they die.
Variant: Tall Doom Bloom[]
Some Doom Blooms are taller than the regular Doom Bloom, and will be referred to as "tall Doom Blooms" here for the sake of clarity. These Doom Blooms behave exactly like their smaller counterparts, but have the opposite tell for their bite attack (squawking to strike the target and staying silent to strike above the target) and cannot be hit by ground-based weapons. They are also able to avoid grounded attacks, but are subjected to the Anti-Flying Specialist Battle Plug; they otherwise have the same stats that regular Doom Blooms have. Two of the Doom Blooms that Reclusa summons during the Weeping Reclusa phase will always be tall Doom Blooms.
Behind the Scenes[]
The name Doom Bloom incorporates a rhyme between "doom" and "bloom," with the former referencing how Reclusa, who created the Doom Blooms, wishes to destroy Concordia, and the latter referencing them looking like flowers.
The design of the Doom Bloom's beak comes from an alligator clip.
Nomenclature[]
In the Japanese dub, Doom Blooms are known as "Dāku Furawā," with their name coming from a transliteration of "dark flower." In Chinese, they are literally called "dark flowers," with the name Hēiàn Huā. Doom Blooms are called Flógobre in Spanish, from flor ("flower") and lúgubre ("gloomy," "mournful," "dismal").
