Trivia[]

  • This game marks the return of 3D platform for the Donkey Kong franchise as the last 3D mainline Donkey Kong game was Donkey Kong 64, a game that came out 25 years ago.
  • This game marks the first time Pauline is playable in a game that is outside a spin-off title.
  • Bonanza initially referred to success at finding ore deposits in mines,[2] and this game begins with the discovery of Banandium Gems at Ingot Isle.
  • Since Donkey Kong Bananza Direct release, there was a debate among fans regarding if this was a prequel to the Donkey Kong arcade game, due to Pauline's young age. However, because the elderly Cranky Kong (the original Donkey Kong) appears in the game, there's confusion amongst fans if the arcade Pauline is a different person than recent incarnations.
    • Interestingly, Cranky Kong mentions the events of Donkey Kong and Pauline doesn't indicate she recognizes him, suggesting it is not a prequel to the original arcade game.
    • The game's Producer Kenta Motokura and Director Kazuya Takahashi have been asked several times regarding if it's the same Pauline as in Super Mario Odyssey. However, they have declined to answer directly, with the latter indicating the game has a slight hint about the truth on this matter, but without specifying what that hint is. Instead, they say to play the game and use one's own imagination.[3][4][5][6]
  • In Donkey Kong Bananza's post-game, the new song Pauline comes up with is implied to be or becomes Jump Up, Super Star!:

Takahashi: "It's something you can pick up on to some extent from the story, but the finer points are left to your imagination."
  6. [4] Takahashi: "Now as to why 13-year-old in particular was the choice, I think that's something that we want players to, in the course of enjoying the game, start to puzzle out, think for themselves." Interviewer: Seeing a young Pauline and knowing that you all worked on Super Mario Odyssey, I start to think story-wise, this is maybe a Super Mario Odyssey prequel. Takahashi: "Certainly because a lot of team members also worked on Super Mario Odyssey, there are some similarities in terms of how they think about the setting of the characters for both games, but it's something we really can't explain all of for now because we need to leave something for people to consider as they're playing the game." - Our Big Bananas Interview With the Developers of Donkey Kong Bananza, Retrieved September 23, 2025.
