Digga-Leg is a boss in Super Mario Galaxy 2. He is encountered after Mario makes his way to the planet the boss is residing on. Digga-Leg vastly resembles a smaller version of Megaleg from Super Mario Galaxy, with his weak spot being his underside, which contains a Power Star that powers him. However, this version only has two legs, and his eyes emit a red glow. Mario's only option is to drill through the planet with a Spin Drill from wherever Digga-Leg is not and strike his underside.

This boss looks like a mechanical version of a Swaphopper (even if this enemy appears only later in the game): it has a rounded body and two legs, it has a spike on his head (which is actually a Digga launcher) and his only weak spot is on the underbelly. Digga-Leg has red glowing eyes and a megaphone for a mouth, which emits a loud noise when the robot is activated.

Digga-Leg's primary methods of attack are to stomp around his small, rocky planetoid in the Spin-Dig Galaxy, and to summon Diggas. If, and when he gets annoyed, he will jump into the air and kill Mario if he crushes him. When Digga-Leg gets hit three times with the drill, he will calm right down, blow up, and hand over his Power Star. The Power Star's name is Digga-Leg's Planet. When Mario gets enough Comet Medals a Prankster Comet comes to the Spin-Dig Galaxy. This comet unlocks Digga-Leg's Daredevil Run. In this level Mario has only one health bar and he cannot get any more. But instead of having to do the entire level, Mario is sent straight to Digga-Leg's planetoid. Digga-Leg is powered by a new Power Star but the battle is the same, except for the fact that Mario cannot get hit by anything, or else he will lose a life.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Digga-Leg resembles a smaller Megaleg, though it has only two legs and its eyes emanate a red glow. Because of this, it also resembles a Snifit. Its shape is similar to that of a Swaphopper. Its weak spot is its glass underside, which contains a Power Star. It lets off steam periodically. When the player first encounters it, it slowly activates, then massively lets off steam before attacking.

Digga-Leg SMG2 battle

Digga-Leg sending a Digga after Mario

Digga-Leg attacks by stomping around the planetoid and creating Diggas, which burrow through the ground's surface and try to harm Mario. Mario can defeat the Diggas by stomping on their heads or by drilling under them. When angered, Digga-Leg will jump high into the air and come plummeting down, damaging Mario if he's in the way. Unlike most large enemies, if Mario is hit by its legs, he simply gets knocked away and takes damage rather than getting crushed.

The only way Mario can defeat Digga-Leg is by using the Spin Drill to burrow through the planet from the position opposite its glass underside. Each time Mario drills into the glass, it will become increasingly cracked. This will only work if Mario starts drilling from the right area of the planet at the right time. If he misfires, he will either run into one of Digga-Leg's legs or the protected part of its head and be bounced back (with an accompanying clang sound). After Mario cracks Digga-Leg's glass underside three times, it explodes, leaving behind the mission's Power Star.

There is also a Prankster Comet for this fight. Digga-Leg has the same attacks as before except for one modification: it is a daredevil fight, therefore the player only has one health point, making the boss fight significantly harder. Defeating Digga-Leg will give the player a silver crown next to the galaxy's name if Silver Stars Down Deep has also been completed.

Between the two Super Mario Galaxy games, Digga-Leg is the only boss whose battle takes place in a 2D segment.

Trivia[]

  • Digga-Leg shares his boss music with the Whomp King.
  • Digga-Leg's battle style is similar to Raphael the Raven's from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its port.
  • Unlike most large enemies, if Mario is hit by Digga-Leg's legs, he simply gets knocked away and takes damage instead of getting crushed and insta-killed. Thus, Digga-Leg is one of the two bosses in Super Mario Galaxy 2 (or rather, the franchise) whose crush attack does not cause an immediate death. The Bouldergeist is the other.
  • Digga-Leg was originally going to be called "Digg-Leg", but this was changed in the final version of the game for unknown reasons.
  • Digga-Leg can also be seen on his planet in the background of the Super Mario Galaxy 2 Puzzle Swap panel in StreetPass Mii Plaza for the Nintendo 3DS.
