In Super Mario Sunshine[]
Delfino Plaza is the main hub area, taking the role of Princess Peach's Castle from Super Mario 64.
Delfino Plaza is first shown in the form of clips during the cutscene of Mario's court trial. During it, the Pianta prosecutor reveals that the inhabitants of Delfino Plaza rely heavily on the presence of the many Shine Sprites as a source of safety and comfort. Because a lookalike of Mario named Shadow Mario polluted Delfino Plaza and its Shine Gate, causing the Shine Sprites to flee, Delfino Plaza had been plunged into darkness. Before Princess Peach and Toadsworth can object to the case, the Pianta judge overrules them and orders Mario to clean the entire island.
In another cutscene after Mario spends time in jail, Mario is seen in Delfino Plaza for the first time, in which the Isle Delfino Police instruct him to clean the island. After this, Mario is free to explore around Delfino Plaza.
Fifteen Shine Sprites can be obtained in Delfino Plaza itself, and like the other main courses, one of the Shine Sprites that Mario can obtain is from collecting a hundred coins. Five of the Shine Sprites are each obtained in a different mini-course: Super Slide, Pachinko Game, Lily Pad Ride, Turbo Track, and Red Coin Field. The former two do not require a certain nozzle or the assistance of Yoshi, meaning it is possible for Mario to obtain them before entering a course. There are a few other Shine Sprites that Mario can obtain before entering one of the courses, including from spraying a Shine Painting near the lighthouse, breaking every crate in a minigame hosted by the Crate guy on two separate occasions, or paying a Chuckster a coin to throw Mario into a tower. As Mario gradually obtains Shine Sprites from Delfino Plaza and the other courses in generally, Delfino Plaza becomes brighter over time.
The first course that can be accessed is Bianco Hills, but before Mario can access it, he must defeat the brown Polluted Piranha Plant so that the brown Generator and goop disappear. Following this, a cutscene is shown where the Grand Pianta Statue rises back out. Mario then has to chase down Shadow Mario and spray him with FLUDD enough so that Shadow Mario goes back to the Grand Pianta Statue, paints a Rainbow M on the side, and then enters it, creating a permanent portal to Bianco Hills.
Aside from Bianco Hills, the second and third courses, Ricco Harbor and Gelato Beach can also be accessed from a Rainbow M portal, specifically on the side of the Boathouse and the lighthouse, respectively. The fourth course, Pinna Park, can be accessed via a cannon on the west side of Delfino Plaza, but only after Princess Peach has been kidnapped by Shadow Mario. Noki Bay can be entered by staring at the sun while standing on a picture of a Shine Sprite in the port. Sirena Beach and Pianta Village are both accessed by means of red Warp Pipes, which are located on a rooftop behind the Grand Pianta Statue and on top of the Shine Gate respectively. However, before Sirena Beach can become permanently accessible, Yoshi has to eat the pineapple blocking the pipe.
Mario can use the large sewer system built beneath Delfino Plaza to obtain coins, blue coins, and 1-Up Mushrooms.
After Mario chases and defeats Shadow Mario in Episode 7 of every course, Shadow Mario returns to Delfino Plaza and floods it, forcing the citizens to retreat onto the buildings' rooftops for safety. This also unlocks the final course, Corona Mountain, which is accessed via a small cave behind the Shine Gate.
After Corona Mountain is accessed at least once, a boat appears near the Boathouse. For ten coins, Mario can pay the Pianta to take him back over to Delfino Airstrip, and Mario can have the Pianta return him over to Delfino Plaza free-of-charge.
In the ending, after Bowser is defeated, a cutscene of the Piantas celebrating in Delfino Plaza is shown.

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games[]
The Dream Event Snow Day Street Hockey takes place in Delfino Plaza. It features three different arenas in different areas of Delfino Plaza: one at the Grand Pianta Statue; one around the fruit stand; and another around houses near the cannon. Each arena has its own layout and hazards, with the Grand Pianta Statue arena consisting of banana peels and bouncy mushrooms on each side of the rink, the market place having several Brick Blocks that can be turned into coins, and the house rink having small holes in the wall the puck can go through. In doing so, a Pianta throws a shell onto the rink that serves as the puck.
