The DK Space is a special space that first appears in Mario Party 5. (Beginning with Mario Party 5 --and until Mario Party 9-- Donkey Kong leaves the playable character roster. And he does not return as a fully playable character until the home console games Mario Party 10, Super Mario Party, Mario Party Superstars, and Super Mario Party Jamboree.) When someone lands on this space, then Donkey Kong appears. And he does a positive effect. This space is the opposite of Bowser Space.
Mario Party 5[]
In Mario Party 5, there is one DK Space on the board. And it appears in a random spot (replacing a random Plus Space). In this game when you land on it, then Donkey Kong lets you do one of 3 events.
Events in Mario Party 5[]
- DK Minigame: A DK Minigame begins, and every player gets once, twice, or three times the number of coins for each banana they get. (On DK Minigames, they get one coin from each banana they collect or five coins from a banana bunch.) At the end, Donkey Kong converts the bananas (which the player collected) into coins.
- DK Bonus: Lets you roll a DK Barrel Dice Block that gives you coins (5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 coins).
- DK Roulette: A Dice Block duel. This is similar to the Dice Duel with Goomba on Goomba's Greedy Gala (from Mario Party 4). Donkey Kong appears. Then he (on the player) rolls a number on the Dice Block. If the player rolls a higher number than his, then they receive a free star. The player wins a star if they roll higher than Donkey Kong (or if Donkey Kong rolls a "1"). But they lose and not get anything if they roll lower than him (or if Donkey Kong rolls a "10"). However, if the player loses, they remain on the same space and do not go back to the start.
- If Donkey Kong rolls a "1", the player (since they do not roll lower than "1") wins automatically. And they get a free star. (The player does not roll lower than "1". That is, in which case, they roll a higher number if Donkey Kong rolls a "1". And they --instantly-- win and get a free star.) If Donkey Kong rolls a "10", the player (since they can't beat a "10") lose automatically. And they get nothing. (The player can't roll higher than "10". That is, in which case they --instantly-- leave with nothing. That is, if Donkey Kong rolls a "10". However, they do not go back to the start. But they remain on the same space.)
In Story Mode, if the player lands on a DK Space, they get 10 coins. If a Koopa Kid (which is the player's opponents) land on one, Donkey Kong reduces their coins by half.
In Party Mode, on the Bowser event (via the Bowser Space), when Donkey Kong appears to punch Bowser, the "DK Space" music plays.
Mario Party 6[]
This space returns in Mario Party 6. There are more DK Spaces on the board, but only occurs during the daytime. The DK Roulette is removed. However, the DK Bonus now has a chance of getting a star.
Events in Mario Party 6[]
- DK Minigame: Same as Mario Party 5.
- DK Bonus: Lets you roll a DK Barrel Dice Block that gives you coins (5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 coins) or a star.
- If this is played on Snowflake Lake, there are no stars on this board. So each player starts with 5 stars (10 in Team Mode). (That is, if not counting handicaps.) But it is possible to get a star from Donkey Kong from the "DK Bonus" event. (DK Spaces are the only way where new stars can be added.) And multiplayer DK minigames remains unchanged from the previous three boards (and the previous installment --Mario Party 5-- altogether).
No DK or Bowser Spaces appear in Castaway Bay or Clockwork Castle. That is because in the board Clockwork Castle, players follow Donkey Kong in the day and Bowser at night.
However, the "DK Space" music still plays when:
- The player at Castaway Bay stop at DK's Riverboat.
- The player passes Donkey Kong at Clockwork Castle
- Donkey Kong takes his move (after the players) at Clockwork Castle.
Mario Party 7[]
When this space is triggered by the player in Mario Party 7, then Donkey Kong appears and does a positive effect. In this installment, both the Roulette and Bonus events are gone. Players can only earn their prizes from the DK Spaces by minigames alone.
In this game, there are two types of Minigames (single player and multiplayer):
- Single Player DK Minigame: The player challenges Donkey Kong to a challenge, and gets 10, 20 or 30 coins, or a star for winning. (However on the board Windmillville, due to a special stipulation, the player --on single player DK minigames-- can only win 10, 20, or 30 coins.)
- Multiplayer DK Minigame: Similar to Mario Party 5 and 6.
There are two unique stipulations (one for the board Pyramid Park and one for Windmillville):
- In Pyramid Park, there are no stars on this board. So each player starts with 5 stars (10 in Team Mode). (That is, if not counting handicaps.) But it is possible to get a star from Donkey Kong from the single player DK minigame. (DK Spaces are the only way where new stars can be added.) And multiplayer DK minigames remains unchanged from the previous four boards (and the previous two installments --Mario Party 5 and 6-- altogether).
- In Windmillville, as a special stipulation, players can only get 10, 20, or 30 coins through single player DK minigames (via DK Spaces). And multiplayer DK minigames remains unchanged from the previous four boards (and the previous two installments --Mario Party 5 and 6-- altogether). New stars cannot be added (by Donkey Kong) because it is due to the unorthodox method of collecting and/or stealing stars. Players get and/or steal stars by windmill investments instead.
Mario Party 8[]
In this game when someone lands on it, Donkey Kong appears and starts an event which is unique to the board. (He shows up and does a positive effect.) Afterwards, all DK Spaces turn into Bowser Spaces. In this game, all of the events are gone (the Roulette, Bonus, and Minigame events). The DK event (via the DK Space) is now a board mechanic.
On one board Bowser's Warped Orbit, there are no stars on this board. So each player starts with 5 stars (10 in Tag Battle). (That is, if not counting handicaps.) But it is possible to get a star from Donkey Kong from the "DK Bonus" event. (DK Spaces are the only way where new stars can be added. That is, or in the case of a Bowser Space, new stars can be taken away.)
Mario Party 9[]
In this game, DK Spaces only appear on the board DK's Jungle Ruins. If any player lands on this space, the Bananas and Z-Bananas (which replace Mini Stars and Mini Ztars --from the previous six boards-- but have a similar effect to mini stars and mini ztars) rotate around the stage in an event called Banana Spin Wheel. Unlike in the previous four installments (Mario Party 5 through 8), the DK event acts like a Green Space event. And it is sometimes considered positive or negative.
