Cuccos are a recurring chicken species from the The Legend of Zelda franchise. They made their first overall appearance in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, but Cuccos made a few Mario-related appearances, the first being WarioWare: Smooth Moves, but a majority of those are in the Super Smash Bros. series.

In WarioWare series[]

WarioWare: Smooth Moves[]

A Cucco makes a cameo in level 3 of the microgame Ocarina of Time, although in the form of a gag, as Link turns into a Cucco if he manages to pull out the Master Sword.

WarioWare: Move It![]

A Cucco stars in the microgame The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, where the goal is for it to avoid being caught by Link while navigating around obstacles.

In Super Smash Bros. series[]

Cuccos make their series debut as a usable item. They are also encountered as enemies in Smash Run. There are two trophies of Cucco, distinctly named Cucco (Item) and Cucco (Enemy) that correspond to their role as a usable item and enemy in Smash Run respectively. As an item, Cuccos are designed after their appearance from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and as an enemy in Smash Run, Cuccos take on a sprite-based form resembling their sprites from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

As an item, when a Cucco is summoned, it walks around harmlessly unless it takes damage from either a fighter, including if the user throws it at another fighter, or a stage hazard. When this occurs, a flock of aggressive Cuccos fly in to attack whoever triggered them, although any other fighter caught within the flock also takes damage. If the flock is triggered by a stage hazard, they target random opponents.

In Smash Run, although they have a different appearance, Cuccos are relatively similar to their item counterpart. They do not become angered if grabbed. Attacking a Cucco still results in a flock of them appearing, but the screen flashes red slightly before this occurs, akin to what occurs in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Cuccos can neither be defeated nor yield any items, so the player's fighter therefore has to avoid them entirely.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]

Cuccos retain their role as an item and trophy from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. They do not return as an enemy in Smash Run, due to the mode's absence, nor does the Cucco (Enemy) trophy appear.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Cuccos return as an item, and they act the same as in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. A Cucco is also featured as a support spirit.
