Super Mario

Crowbers, also named Crows, are crow-like enemies which first appear in New Super Mario Bros..

Profile[]

Crowbers tend to appear in the last worlds of the games in which they appear. They attack Mario or any other potential victim with rather fast moves. They tend to swoop down on their foes whenever they approach and are commonly found in barren wastelands or other spooky-themed areas, while not much of a threat alone, Crowbers tend to appear in large flocks or colonies making them rather troublesome to avoid. In most games, Crowbers are black birds with an orange beak and legs however in some cases, Crowbers can be purple and have a yellow beak and legs.

In the Super Mario series[]

A Crowber

Crowbers make their debut in New Super Mario Bros.. Here, Crowbers are only encountered in World 8-1, where they emerge flying from the horizon, do an acrostic spin in the skies and swoop down and dart to attack Mario (or Luigi). As progress is made throughout the course, more of them will appear and will chase after the player. Crowbers attack quickly, making it somewhat difficult for the player to defeat them. Despite this, Crowbers can easily be defeated with basically any attack. It is advisable to carry an extra Super Mushroom (or any other Power-Up) when in a level filled with Crowbers.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Crowbers reappear in the game New Super Mario Bros. Wii. This time, they have a purple plumage and a lighter beak and legs, and appeared in World 7-Ghost House and World 8-5. They attack in the same manner as they did in New Super Mario Bros. and can be defeated in the same ways be it with a stomp, Fire Flower, or Starman. The effects of an Ice Flower or Penguin Suit can also freeze them.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Crowber World

Mario runs beyond the Crowbers in the Sky.

Crowbers soar the skies once again in the Nintendo 3DS game, New Super Mario Bros. 2. They appear in World Mushroom-CannonWorld 6-4 and in the first course of the Impossible Pack. They maintain their appearance and behavior from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Just as before, despite their aggressiveness, they are rather easy to beat and can be defeated with any attack, they are also slightly slower in this game than in previous games.

In Dr. Mario World[]

After a seven-year absence, Crowbers reappear in Dr. Mario World as assistants. Here, they return to their black coloration with orange beak/feathers from New Super Mario Bros.. Game-wise, their Stage Mode skills grants a 10% chance of gaining one extra capsule upon the start of a stage.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King[]

An Origami Crowber

Crowbers make their Paper Mario series debut in Paper Mario: The Origami King. In this game, they can be found in Bonehead Island swooping down on Mario as he walks by. In battle, they attack similarly to Swoopers with the exception that they're stronger and faster. Crowbers are flying enemies so Hammers are obviously useless against them making Jumps more ideal when up against Crowbers.

Unused appearances[]

In New Super Mario Bros. U, as well as New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Crowbers can be found in the game's files, suggesting they would have appeared as an enemy, but Crowbers do not appear in any of the levels. It is shown that they would have retained their appearance from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Trivia[]

  • While they do not appear in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Crowber is mentioned as being one of the answers in one of the game's Toad Quizzes, Toad Brain.
  • Several crows somewhat similar in appearance to Crowbers appear in the introduction sequence to Luigi's Mansion. These crows can be seen watching Luigi enter his mansion for the first time.
  • Crowbers were also planned to appear as enemies in Paper Mario: Sticker Star but were taken out of the game's final build.
  • The name Crowber appears to be a pun from "crowbar," a tool used to remove nails.
  • In the Prima guide of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, they are known as Ravens. Despite this, other guides for the game give Crowbers their usual name.
