Super Mario

Crabbers (also simply referred to as Crabs) are crab-like enemies which first appear in Super Mario Galaxy and return in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They resemble regular crabs but have a big pincer and a small one.

Profile[]

Behavior[]

Crabbers always turn their face to Mario or Luigi to prevent him from reaching their rear end, which is their weak point and must be hit with a Star Spin to destroy them. Mario can use his Star Spin or stomping abilities to stun them and buy himself time to run around them. Upon defeat, Crabbers drop three Star Bits. Crabbers have a turquoise variant that is harder to defeat as they retreat much quicker when Mario or Luigi gets near, but defeating a turquoise Crabber causes it to leave behind a 1-Up Mushroom. If a Crabber manages to hit the plumbers, it will give a snicker.

History[]

Super Mario Galaxy[]

Crabber Orange Encounter

Mario encounters an Orange Crabber.

Crabber Turquoise Encounter

Mario sees a Turquoise Crabber.

Crabbers first appear in Super Mario Galaxy, in this game, they can be found in several beach-themed Galaxies as a common adversary walking peacefully around the beaches sometimes burrowing into the sand periodically. Upon sighting Mario/Luigi, a Crabber will slowly crawl towards them in a defensive manner. They constantly try to face the plumbers to prevent them from reaching their weak spot which is their backside. A Crabber can be stunned with a stomp, a Star Spin, or the P2 Star Cursor and Mario/Luigi can Star Spin the Crabber's backside to finish it off for three Star Bits, additionally, the effects of a Fire Flower or Rainbow Star can be used to finish one off instantly, there are also turquoise Crabbers, these Crabbers will run away from Mario/Luigi, defeating a turquoise Crabber will provide a 1-Up Mushroom. Crabbers can be found in the Beach Bowl Galaxy, the Dusty Dune Galaxy, the Bigmouth Galaxy, the Sea Slide Galaxy, and the Deep Dark Galaxy.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Rolling Crabber Romp

Many Crabbers during the Prankster Comet either attack or flee.

Crabbers return in Super Mario Galaxy 2 retaining their behaviors from before. They are once again found commonly in beach-themed Galaxies and defensively attack the plumber or run away from them (depending on the color) and can still burrow in the sands, just as before, Crabbers can be stomped on or Star Spinned to be stunned (additionally, the Co-Star Luma can stun them) and then their backside can be targeted to finish them off, the effects of a Fire Flower, Rainbow Star, or Rock Mushroom (the latter of which is used during the Rolling Crabber Romp mission) can be used to finish them off instantly (the Orange Crabbers leave behind Star Bits and the Turquoise Crabbers leave behind a 1-Up Mushroom), additionally, swallowing a Crabber with Yoshi will turn it into a mere claw which can be spat out and used as a projectile for beating other enemies and/or breaking normally unbreakable objects such as glass cages (in a similar fashion to swallowing a Bullet Bill or Spiny Egg). Crabbers can be found in the Boulder Bowl Galaxy, the Starshine Beach Galaxy, and the Battle Belt Galaxy.

Trivia[]

  • Coincidentally, another species of crab, the Sidestepper, can appear in red and blue colors as well.
  • The Prima Guide for Super Mario Galaxy 2 claims that the Turquoise Crabbers can also leave behind Coins upon defeat however this is never seen in-game, it could be possible that this was a beta element.
