Cows (also referred to as Moo Moos) are a species of bovine appearing as obstacles in the Mario Kart series. They first appear in Mario Kart 64.

Description[]

Cows have white bodies and black spots on their bodies and small horns on their heads. Their eyes are beady. Their debut appearance gave them no collar, but starting from Mario Kart DS, a blue collar is hung around their neck with a yellow bell on it. In Mario Kart 8, they can come in multiple colour variations, such as solid black, brown, or blue-spotted.

In Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart 64[]

Cows appear in the background in their namesake course Moo Moo Farm. Due to a fence separating the cows from the track, racers cannot crash into them.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![]

In Mushroom City, there is a truck which advertises Moo Moo Farm with some cows on them.

Mario Kart DS[]

Cows retain their background appearance in the Retro Course N64 Moo Moo Farm, and cannot be interacted with due to the fence, like in their original appearance.

Mario Kart Wii[]

Cows are encountered in Moo Moo Meadows, where they have their first role as an obstacle. During the first lap, players can see cows in the fields, and some of them appear on the opposite side of the fence, and cannot be interacted with. Cows run loose from opened gates starting on the second lap and do so again during the third and final lap. If a racer and a cow collide, the racer gets flipped over as though they hit a Koopa Shell. Cows also make a cameo in Moonview Highway, on a sign that reads Moo Moo Dairy.

Mario Kart 7[]

Two cows were given a cameo appearance on a Moo Moo Dairy sign in the returning Wii Coconut Mall. A similar hazard called Goat can be found in Daisy Hills.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Cows return in Wii Moo Moo Meadows, which appears as a Retro Course in this game. Unlike before, cows appear in four different colors, including white with brown spots, white with blue spots, black, or brown. There is a new sponsor featuring cows titled Moo Moo Meadows Milk. A cow is also featured as a stamp in the original Wii U version, gained by beating the staff ghost of the course. The Nintendo Switch version includes the Mii Racing Suit based on a cow in the Booster Course Pass, using the design from Mario Kart Tour.

Mario Kart Tour[]

A Mii racing suit based on cows can be found in the game, with a dungaree similar to a farmer. The Moo Moo Offroader is a vehicle based on the cow, and the Moo Moo Meadows Milk sponsor from Mario Kart 8 returns.

Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit[]

Cows return in Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, where they act as obstacles in the Windmill Meadows course.

Mario Kart World[]

Cows return in Mario Kart World, reprising their role as obstacles in Moo Moo Meadows. Additionally, a bovine creature named Cow who resembles them appears as a racer for this game.

In Yoshi franchise[]

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[]

While cows are not physically present, Moo Moo Yoshi is featured as an unlockable Yoshi pattern, giving him a cow-like design.

Yoshi's Crafted World[]

The Moo Moo Meadows Milk sponsor from Mario Kart 8 makes various cameo appearances on the cartons and signs in the background of the flip side of Rail-Yard Run and Go-Go Yoshi. There are also five cardboard cow crafts, which serve as Blockafeller's first souvenir request. They are first seen on the front side of Rail-Yard Run.

Similar to Yoshi's Woolly World, there is a cow costume the Yoshis can wear.
