Coincentration is a minigame which first appears in Super Mario 64 DS and later remade for New Super Mario Bros., with updated visuals.

In Super Mario 64 DS, Coincentration is one of Wario's minigames, and it has a harder variation named Intense Coincentration, which has fewer coins. In New Super Mario Bros., Coincentration is a Puzzle minigame, playable in both single-player and multiplayer.

Layout[]

The minigame takes place in a dark, underground area with bricks in the background. On the upper screen are three light gray, level platforms stretching across the screen, and Wario is standing on the lowest one. The background music is an arrangement of the Underground Theme from Super Mario Bros., fitting with the underground theme. The bottom screen consists of 24 Brick Blocks, which are arranged into three rows, each with eight Brick Blocks together.

Opening[]

Wario faces a Moneybag and punches it up into the air. After this, 40 coins make their way down to where the Brick Blocks are, going into them at random, as the Moneybags falls offscreen.

Gameplay[]

The player has to tap the Stylus to tap the Brick Blocks containing coins, each worth one point. After counting, the Brick Block turns into an Empty Block depicting a yellow number of coins that were in the Brick Block. Because of the large number of coins that fall into the Brick Blocks during the intro, the minigame is luck-based in a sense. If the player taps a block containing no coins, the minigame ends, and the numbers corresponding to where each Brick Block was located is revealed on the Touch Screen. The highest possible score that can be obtained is 40.

In the multiplayer variation of New Super Mario Bros., each player takes a turn selecting a block. If a player taps a block without any coins, the block breaks, and the character loses two coins. It is possible to have a score below zero, in the negative range. A player can skip their turn if desired, although this can only be done one time. Once every coin has been found, whoever has the most coins is the winner.

In Mario & Sonic series[]

The minigame's name is used as the title for an arrangement of the Underground Theme in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games for Wii, Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games for Nintendo 3DS, Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for Wii U.
