Coinathlon appears as a mode in Mario Party: Star Rush. In Cointathlon, the player plays a series of minigames racing around the track collecting coins to cross the finish line first.

Description

"In Coinathlon mode, it’s pure skill with no dice, as competitors play a series of minigames in quick succession, whilst racing around a track collecting coins and aiming to cross the finish line first. You’ll need to have nimble fingers and remain focused if you want to win, as Coinathlon is the ultimate test of your minigame skills."

In Coinathlon, the player chooses their character. The player chooses to play Rival Race or Free Play. Rival Race requires the player to race against their rivals to score ten wins. Free Play allows the player to choose the minigames and the number of laps the player wants to play.

When playing Coinathlon, the players will play the same minigame for a minute. While playing the minigame, the player may collect an item box which may either benefit the player or harm their opponents. After the minigame finishes, the game shows the players' progress and allows the minigame winner to move three spaces forward. The cycle continues until the player wins.

Spoiler warning : Don't you even dare read the spoiler! Because if you do… Hoo hoo hoo hoo hoooooo… A horrible fate awaits you.

Sometimes, Bowser will appear before the minigame starts to warn the player that the player may have to play one of Bowser's minigames after finishing the mode's minigame. If the player survives Bowser's minigame, the player is not affected. If the player does not survive Bowser's minigame, the player moves several spaces back.
