Coin Blocks are a type of Block consisting of multiple coins. They first appear in Super Mario Bros., and have since made several appearances in the Super Mario series as well as other Mario spinoffs.

Description[]

These blocks usually have the same appearance as either a Brick Block or a Question Block in their appearances. A single hit produces a single coin, and Mario or another character can repeatedly hit the Coin Block to earn coins until it solidifies into an Empty Block. Hitting a Coin Block the first time essentially triggers a timer of sorts in that if the player's character pauses between instances of jumping at the Coin Block, the number of Coins they can obtain from the Coin Block is reduced, and if the character waits long enough, they can only obtain one more Coin from it. One can generally obtain up to ten or fifteen Coins from a Coin Block.

In New Super Mario Bros., Mario or Luigi can now Ground Pound a Coin Block. If they do so while in their Super form, several coins are released in succession. If they manage to obtain all ten coins, a Super Mushroom is then released. If Mario or Luigi are in their Small form, only one Coin is released each time they Ground Pound.

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, if Mario or Luigi successfully collect every Coin from a Coin Block in succession, it becomes a Gold Block, which they can briefly wear by jumping underneath it.
