"Yar! You'll make a tasty treat!"
—Clawgrip, Super Mario Advance

Clawgrip is a giant, monstrous crab and the fifth boss of Super Mario Bros. 2, in which he is fought at the end of World 5-3. Clawgrip replaces the albino Mouser from Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic.

In Super Mario Bros. 2[]

During his battle, Clawgrip is next to a pile of rocks, and it attacks by throwing them at the player's character. Likewise, they can attack Clawgrip by picking up one of its rocks before it falls offscreen and throwing it back at him. Clawgrip can be defeated upon taking five hits.

In the remake Super Mario Advance, right before the battle commences, there is a sequence of Clawgrip starting off as a small crab before being engulfed by four bubbles, causing it to grow to its usual size. This could refer to how the instruction booklet, even for the original Super Mario Bros. 2, states that Clawgrip "grows suddenly." Like the other bosses, Clawgrip has his own line that plays before the boss battle, with Clawgrip's in particular telling the playable character that they would make a "tasty treat." Clawgrip speaks with a stereotypical pirate accent.

In the ending's cast of characters, Clawgrip's name was spelled Clawglip, something would only be fixed in the English version of Super Mario Advance, as even the game's Japanese version retains the typo.

Appearances in other media[]

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Clawgrip appears in three episodes, "Rolling Down the River," "Pirates of Koopa," and "Mario of the Deep." It does not have any lines, and there is an entire species of Clawgrips rather than a standalone character.
