A Chomp Bro (ワンマーブロス Wanmā Burosu?, Wammer Bros.) is a Hammer Bro enemy that wields a Chain Chomp in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. The Chomp Bro appears as a minion in Bowser's Castle.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

The Chomp Bro is a bulky green Hammer Bro that holds a Chain Chomp, bearing a resemblance to hammer throw athletes, which they are most likely based on. They have green skin and black helmets. Originally, Chomp Bros. were barefoot and had brown belts and an arm tattoo, but their 3DS incarnation gives them black shoes and removes their belt and arm tattoo.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[]

Chomp Bro appears in Bowser's Castle, although they are not encountered in the overworld. The Chomp Bro attack with Chain Chomps which will be either thrown at Mario or Luigi. If they spin the Chain Chomp clockwise, the Chomp Bros. will go after Mario. If counter-clockwise, it is targeted at Luigi. Numerous spins shows how fast the Chomp Bros will throw their Chain Chomp, and the attack is avoided by jumping. If either brother jumps on the Chain Chomp, the Chain Chomp falls off the screen, causing the Chomp Bro. to become defenseless. In their defenseless state, Chomp Bros. may flee from the battle, but occasionally, the Chomp Bro. will be reunited with his Chain Chomp and continue the battle.

Chomp Bros. are Level 41 enemies who have 120 hit points and a speed of 80, and their defeat nets 128 Experience and 8 Coins. They can sometimes drop Peppers that boost defense and the Shroom Bells item.

Behind the scenes[]

Etymology[]

The Chomp Bro. was named after how he uses Chain Chomps as a weapon.

Nomenclature[]

In Japanese, The Chomp Bro was called Wanmā Burosu (written ワンマーブロス), with Wanmā (written ワンマー) coming from "hammer" and "Wanwan," the latter being a dog's bark in Japanese which is also the name of the Chain Chomp and Burosu (written ブロス and derived from "Bro," a slang term from "brother") reflecting how Hammer Bros. and their variants have the word in their Japanese name. In Chinese, they got the name Wāngwāng Chuí Xiōngdì, which translates as "Chain Chomp Hammer Bro." and is written 汪汪锤兄弟. Their Spanish name is Hermano Cadena Mordelona (Chomp Brother), reflecting how Hammer Bro. variants have Hermano followed by word that refers to their weapon. Their Italian name is Unitelli, from the verb unire (to unite) and fratello, which means "brother." In French, their name is Frère Boulouf (with Boulouf, the Chain Chomp's French name, coming from boule (ball) and louf, a synonym of fou ("crazy," "silly")). The German dub calls them Chomp-Bruder, translating as "chomp brother." In Korean, the enemy is called Haemeong Beureoseu (해멍브러스), with haemong being a pun on "hammer" and meongmeong-i (chain chomp; written 멍멍이) with Beureoseu (written 브러스) coming from Haemeo Beureoseu (the base Hammer Bro's Korean name, written 해머브러스).
