Not to be confused with Chomps.
For other uses of the word "Chomp", see Chomp (disambiguation).

Chomps are a chainless variant of Chain Chomp which first appear in Mario Kart 64. They are often seen rolling around the terrain rather than bouncing (a trait they initially had in their earlier appearances). Chomps are typically much bigger than regular Chain Chomps.

In Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart 64[]

Chomping Rainbow Road

A Chomp chomping at the Rainbow Road.

Chomps make their debut in Mario Kart 64, where one can be seen on Rainbow Road chewing along the track as it moves in a zigzag pattern. If a player is hit by the moving Chomp, he/she will be knocked into the air and will lose a lot of speed. Chomps are basically invincible and immune to all attacks, only the effects of a Boo or Starman can be used to avoid taking damage from the Chomp.

Mario Kart Wii[]

Chain Chomp Wheel May 2009

The Chomp rolling at Chain Chomp Wheel.

A single Chomp appears in Mario Kart Wii as a major obstacle in Chain Chomp Wheel. At the start of each battle, the Chomp is seen in it's slot (alongside all the other races) but when the timer hits the 02:53 mark, the Chomp emerges from it's hole and starts rolling around the arena acting as a very large hazard. If any racers are hit by the Chomp, they will be flattened and will either lose a Balloon or half their Coins. The Chomp is also immune to all attacks (except those of the Starman or Mega Mushroom).

Mario Kart 7[]

Chomp Moonwalkers

The Chomp rolling on the Moon.

Several Chomps can be seen in Mario Kart 7 appearing on the moon section of Rainbow Road. They are seen rolling around on the Moon and bouncing off the craters and will knock over any racers that run into them unless they're under the effects of a Bullet Bill or Starman.

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[]

Chomp Bouncer Rainbow Road

The Chomp bouncing on the Road.

Several Chomps are also seen in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In this game, they can be found in several courses with the most notable being the returning N64 Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 64, here, they can be seen bouncing on the wavy parts of the track knocking over any racers that collide (unless they're under the effects of a Bullet Bill, Starman, or Boo). Chomps can also be seen in several DLC courses such as the returning 3DS Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 7 as well retaining their behavior from the respective games.

Mario Kart Tour[]

Chomp Rainbow Road Tour

The Chomp on the Moon again.

Chomps reappear again in Mario Kart Tour this time appearing on the returning 3DS Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 7. They retain their behavior from before (rolling along the moon and bouncing off the craters) and can knock racers over unless they're under the effects of a Bullet Bill or Starman.

In Yoshi franchise[]

Yoshi's Island series[]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is the technical debut of Chomps, since while Chomps do not appear, two variants of them were introduced: Incoming Chomps and Chomp Sharks. which appear in the background and jump to the main setting of the level and crash down, making bottomless pits. The player needs to be aware as the Chain Chomps may land anywhere. Chain Chomps can also go down the same bottomless pit, so the player has to be careful about those too. They cannot be defeated. Another variant is the Chomp Shark, which chases Yoshi and Baby Mario across wide chasms.

Apart from this enemy, two other varieties of "Chomp" are introduced in this game: Chomp Sharks and Incoming Chomps. These enemies lack chains and are massive in size, a trait retained by Chomps in many future games. Chomp Rocks also make an appearance as objects or obstacles; they resemble Chomp heads made of rock.

Yoshi's Island DS[]

Both Incoming Chomps and Chomp Sharks make a reappearance, retaining their behavior from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, although Chomps do not. The game introduces another variety of Chomps, Stompin' Chomp, which appear prominently in Rompin' Stompin' Chomps and The Cave That Never Ends. All Chomp varieties are invincible and cannot be defeated, although each type needs to have an egg thrown at it for one to appear in the Island Museum, under the Giant Enemy Exhibit.

Yoshi's New Island[]

Two varieties of Chomps are encountered as enemies, Chomp Sharks and Flaming Chomps, the latter of which replaces Incoming Chomps and makes their first appearance. A single Chain Chomp also appears in the game, but like the previous two Yoshi's Island games, Chomps do not appear themselves.

Yoshi's Story[]

Chomp Yoshi's Story Hut

A Chomp in the Hut.

Chomps only appear in Jungle Hut, where the Baby Yoshis must avoid three of them to collect certain fruit within one of the huts. They are enormous, being one of the largest enemies in the game, and constantly move side-to-side, chomping as they move. Each appear on a different vertical level of the hut. If one manages to hurt a Yoshi, it will turn to the screen and make a growling laugh-like sound.

In Mario Party series[]

Mario Party 3[]

Chomp Gnawing

The chomp on the map.

Chomps appear as a partner in Duel Mode. They are not a default partner and must be earned in the lottery. They attack both the player and their partners. Their salary is six coins, they have 2 health, and they have 1 attack. Also, on the Spiny Desert board, a Chomp can be seen near the start of the board, gnawing on a bone.

Mario Party 4[]

Long Claw of the Law

A Chomp in the minigame.

Chomps appear again in Mario Party 4 appearing as one of the possible characters players must catch during the Long Claw of the Law minigame.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]

One Pesky Chomp

The Chomp snacks on the Block.

A single Chomp appears in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time as a common adversary during the Plumbers trip in the Shroob Castle, as the team travels in a Blue Pipe to the Shroob Castle's tower, the Chomp (swimming in the sewer), knocks the Pipe-connections thus causing the plumbers to enter the sewers of the Castle instead, as they traverse through the sewer, they find a ! Block and as they're about to hit it, the Chomp emerges from the water and swallows it and sets out four Laser Blocks that the plumbers can use to combat him. The plumbers need to direct the Laser Blocks to fire at the Chomp (who is poking his head out of one of the Pipes on the top screen), after two hits, several more Chomps show up alongside the main one, if the wrong one is hit, the plumbers will have to try again until they nail the correct Chomp, after the first hit though, it becomes easier to tell which Chomp is the correct one as he is moving his mouth faster than the others, once hit, he disappears and gives up the ! Block allowing the heroes to progress.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Galaxy[]

Chomp Speed Run

Mario near several Chomps.

Chomps appear in Super Mario Galaxy, in this game, they typically can be found in several Galaxies rolling around various planets. They are either spawned from holes/portals or are seen rolling by default. Chomps will damage Mario/Luigi upon contact and can typically only be avoided (unless the plumbers are under the effects of a Rainbow Star) thereby making them far tougher than the Boulders. A Chomp can also be beaten by causing another Chomp to collide with it via the P2 Star Cursor. A Chomp provides 10 Star Bits upon defeat. Chomps can be found in Galaxies such as the Good Egg Galaxy, and the Ghostly Galaxy. Two variants of Chomps also appear in this game these being Chomp Pups (which are smaller and emerge from kennels), and Golden Chomps (which hold Power Stars).

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Chomping Chompworks

Chomps rolling at the Chompworks.

Chomps make a reappearance, this time being slightly more common than in Super Mario Galaxy. Chomps are either seen rolling around the planet on their own or are spawned from holes and portals. The Chomps also tend to follow a set path as well as seen in Galaxies such as the Flip-Swap Galaxy and can also be moved along tracks as well. A Chomp can only be beaten with a Rainbow Star. Chomps can be especially annoying on skinny platforms because if they hit you, you will end up flying into space. Even if they do not send you flying into space, they will push you off the edge to your doom. Chomps can also be lead into large glassy holes in the ground to reveal a Launch Star. The Chompworks Galaxy is a large factory that makes Chomps. The game includes several varieties of Chomps as well such as Chomp Pups, Golden Chomps, and even the new Silver Chomp (which homes in on Mario/Luigi). Unlike the Boulders, Chomps are immune to the effects of the Rock Mushroom. Chomps can either be beaten with the effects of a Rainbow Star or having them collide with a wall or another Chomp, they can also be frozen in place by the Co-Star Luma (this tactic can be used in several situations such as in the Chompworks Galaxy to obtain the Comet Medal easier or during the C'mere, Goomba in the Boulder Bowl Galaxy to lure the Goomba to the Gold Gearmo without it being flattened. Chomps can be found in the Flip-Swap Galaxy, Boulder Bowl Galaxy, the Flipsville Galaxy, and the Chompworks Galaxy. In one part of the Flipsville Galaxy, two paths of Chomps intersect so they automatically collide, resulting in several Star Bits being released.

Crossover appearances[]
