Super Mario

Chip Off Whomp's Block is the first mission of Whomp's Fortress in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. The title is a pun on the phrase "a chip off the old block".

Objective[]

The mission starts off with the Lakitu Bros. informing the player of a tactic to sneak up on enemies. This comes into play, as this method is useful for stealth when dodging sleeping Piranha Plants, making sure they do not wake up.

The player's main goal is to get to the top of Whomp's Fortress, avoiding enemies and obstacles along the way. At the start of the level, the player can do a Backward Somersault to reach higher ground, reaching behind a stone staircase with Thwomps. Then, to the left of a sleeping Piranha Plant nearby, the player can perform a Long Jump (or a backflip as Luigi in Super Mario 64 DS) to skip right to a Whomp and some Lifts, which will take the player right to the Whomp King.

Once at the top, the player comes into a confrontation with the Whomp King, expressing anguish for his kind being construction workers, building houses and paving roads, without receiving gratitude from people, and a battle soon commences.

Battle[]

To defeat the Whomp King, he must be Ground Pounded on his back three times, when he slams his whole body onto the ground, leaving him vulnerable to attacks. In Super Mario 64, Mario can Ground Pound through the Whomp King as he is about to slam down, without taking any damage himself. However, this isn't possible in the DS port, subtle attempts to do so will only lead to the player getting squished and losing 3 points of health.

Once defeated, the Whomp King explodes, thus giving up the Power Star to complete the mission.
