A checkpoint is a game mechanic denoting an object in a level, stage, or other area that marks the point where the player's character can continue from after losing a life. Checkpoints mostly appear in the platforming games, such as the Super Mario series. Their designs vary between games, but they typically take the form of flags.

In the Super Mario series[]

Checkpoints are unmarked in the first Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan), Super Mario Land, and the first Super Mario Galaxy. In Super Mario Bros. 2, Doors serve as a type of checkpoint, as do Rockets. Super Mario Bros. 3's levels lack checkpoints due to their short length, and Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine also lack checkpoints in most of their levels due to their sandbox structure.

Super Mario World is the first game to have an object as a checkpoint, that being a gate that looks like the Goal Gate, albeit shorter. Other objects have been used, like a bell in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and a Middle Ring in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Since the release of New Super Mario Bros. DS, flags have been employed as the checkpoint marker.
