Charvaarghs are a sub-species of Magmaargh which in turn is a sub-species of Blargg. They are lava monsters which possess the long bodies of a Chinese Dragon. Charvaarghs behave very similarly to Magmaarghs however, they fly over the platforms requiring you to wait for them to cross over, in some cases, Charvaarghs are wrapped around the ground and serve as a road block. Like the Magmaarghs, Charvaarghs are typically invincible, however Charvaarghs can be far more deadly than Magmaarghs as they are sometimes powerful enough to instantly kill Mario and friends. Like their cousins, Charvaarghs are completely invincible and not even a Starman can destroy them however it can prevent the heroes from damage.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Charvaarghs first appear in Paper Mario: Sticker Star, their only appearance is in Rugged Road serving only as a road block. If Mario touches a Charvaargh, he will be burned and lose 5 HP. They freeze after a cold-based Thing such as the Fridge Thing is activated which will allow Mario to pass over the frozen iced Charvaarghs unharmed.
Super Mario 3D World/Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
They are also an enemy appearing in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. It is now a species of Blaarg, and is an incredibly lethal foe as they are notably the only enemy in this group to be able to instantly kill Mario and friends. They first appear in the final regular level in World Castle Simmering Lava Lake, they also appear in several other lava-themed levels as well later in the game, they attack by flying over the bridges and jumping back into the lava on the other side. Charvaarghs can also phase through mesh bridges and some are seen flying over Clear Pipes as the heroes travel through them.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Like many enemies from Super Mario 3D World, Charvaarghs return in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker as well as it's ports on the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch. In this game, Charvaarghs behave identically to how they did in Super Mario 3D World, flying out of the lava lakes, across bridges and landing in the other side of the lava lake. They cannot be destroyed and can instantly kill Captain Toad or Toadette upon contact. Their moves must be maneuvered and timed correctly to avoid being scorched. Charvaarghs are commonly seen in lava stages such as Rolling Inferno and Magma Road Marathon.
Mario Party 10
Charvaarghs appear again in Mario Party 10. In this game, they apepar in Chaos Castle as one of the primary obstacles on the first section of this board alongside the Podoboos. They commonly fly over the mesh bridges of the course and whenever players land on Unlucky Spaces, a Charvaargh will fly over and scorch the Captain making them lose half of their Mini Stars. Avoiding them isn't too much of a challenge, a good strategy is to go down the route with the least amount of Unlucky Spaces, or you can go down the path with more and potentially increase the chances of your rivals getting scorched.
The Charvaarghs make yet another appearance in Super Mario Maker 2, and act slightly different. They can only be placed in the Super Mario 3D World style. In a level, the will first drop in the lava, and then follow Mario by leaping out of the lava at him in a similar fashion to a Chinese Dragon. While one or two may be easier to dodge, in large groups they can cause a lot of trouble. They can once again kill Mario instantly and he will need a Starman to prevent damage from them.
- Their name appears to be a combination of the words "Char" (as in burn intensely) and "Magmaargh" (their species origin).
- It's possible that Charvaargh's may be named after the Pokemon Charizard.
