Charlie Day originally voiced Luigi with a New York accent during production. However, the accent was subsequently axed when directors told him was too much like a “Goodfellas” gangster. In response to the change, Day said “Alright! I think you’re wrong, but fine!”[1]
Remnants of takes with the New York accent can be found from the movie's promotional website SMBPlumbing, where Luigi speaks in a voicemail.[2] Day also spoke in a higher pitched New York accent (similar to Joe Pesci) regarding the movie in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel.[3]
