"The servers are the seven chaos. Chaos is power, power is enriched by the heart. The controller is the one who unifies the chaos. Only you can do this. Stop the Chaos Emeralds!"
Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic Adventure 2

The Chaos Emerald is an item from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and a recurring item in the Mario & Sonic series. It made its first Mario-related appearance in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii.

Description[]

The Chaos Emeralds are powerful gems with various effects, the most well-known of which is transforming Sonic the Hedgehog into his Super Sonic form if all seven are together. In Mario & Sonic games, the Chaos Emerald frequently appears as an item in Dream Events.

Crossover appearances[]

Mario & Sonic series[]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)[]

The Chaos Emerald appears as item in the Dream Event, Dream Race, in which the user can most frequently obtain it while in fourth place. The Chaos Emerald is used similarly to Starman in the Mario Kart games, as it grants the user temporary invincibility, a speed boost, and stuns the other characters, causing them to lose speed.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Nintendo DS)[]

The Chaos Emerald is featured in two Dream Events. In Dream Basketball, the Chaos Emerald causes either the other characters' baskets to move faster or a Boo to block one of the baskets. In Dream Long Jump, the Chaos Emerald can generate a strong headwind that affects every character.

Chaos Emeralds in Dream Figure Skating

Chaos Emeralds appear during the Sonic World routine in Dream Figure Skating. Three are collected during the first segment, while the other four Chaos Emeralds are collected during the second segment. During the final segment, the Chaos Emeralds are used by the characters to defeat Perfect Chaos.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS)[]

Chaos Emeralds appear as items in several Dream Events, more than in other Mario & Sonic installments.

In Ski Cross Racing and Extreme Snowboarding, using a Chaos Emerald stuns every opponent ahead of the user and gets rid of their items. In Rocket Ski Jumping, a Chaos Emerald has the same function as Lightning from the Mario Kart series, as the Chaos Emerald strikes every character with lightning, causing them to lose speed and altitude. In Fever Hockey, the Chaos Emerald causes tokens to appear on the rink that strike opponents with lightning if collected, knocking them over and slowing them. In Ski Shooting, using a Chaos Emerald stuns every opponent and temporarily hinders their ability to shoot. In Ultimate Figure Skating, Chaos Emeralds indicate areas on the rink during the routine where the player's character can perform spins and defeat enemies.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[]

Chaos Emeralds are an item in London Party mode, where they can be found in the ? Balloons all over London. When a character uses a Chaos Emerald, their opponents get stunned for a few seconds.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)[]

Chaos Emeralds are an item in Boxing Plus, in which one can fill its user's Special Punch gauge faster for a short amount of time.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)[]

Chaos Emeralds are an item in Duel Rugby Sevens, in which using one knocks over opponents in a circular radius of the user and earns them Duel Points.

Super Smash Bros. series[]

As of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, seven Chaos Emeralds instantly appear around Sonic when he initiates his Final Smash, Super Sonic, causing him to transform, and a blue one appears in one of Sonic's victory poses upon winning a match. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the Chaos Emeralds are featured in each game's respective Super Sonic trophy.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a green Chaos Emerald is held by Shadow the Hedgehog, a returning Assist Trophy, to slow down time.
