Chao (both singular and plural) are a species from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. They made their first overall appearance in Sonic Adventure, but the first Mario-related appearance of Chao is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii. Chao are voiced by Tomoko Sasaki.
In Mario & Sonic series[]

Like in both versions of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Chao return as audience members, and various Chao-shaped balloons appear in the background of certain events. Aside from Hero Chao, Dark Chao now appear in the audience as well. Like in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for Wii, a Chao and Toad appear in the message that reminds players to take a break after playing for a while. In Festival Mode, in either Singles or Team mode, when training for the Ski Cross event, the player's character has to race a Chao to the end. Aside from this, the only other role a Chao has is occasionally sending mail to the player.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS)[]
Chao retain their role as audience members and hot-air balloon cameos. In Curling, a pair of Chao form part of the team, taking on the role of sweeping the path for a character's curling stone. A Chao's color corresponds to whichever team it is on.
In Adventure Tours, several different varieties of Chao, including Hero Chao and Dark Chao, appear in the different areas of Winter Island, where they host events and set challenges. Some Chao appear on the unlockable photo of non-playable characters.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii)[]

Chao, along with Hero Chao and Dark Chao, retain their usual role of being audience members. Unlike the Wii version, the Chao-shaped hot-air balloons now appear in certain events. A pair of Chao also form one of the teams that the player competes against in events requiring a pair of characters, even though the Chao themselves never participate in the events. Regular Chao, along with Hero Chao and Dark Chao, each have their own obtainable badge.
In Story mode, a Chao appears at the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games. The same one appears in the bonus episode Junior, Super Hero?, in which Bowser Jr. inadvertently saves the Chao during its confrontation with an Egg Pawn and an Egg Flapper.
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games[]

Chao also appear as referees and camera operators in certain events, such as in Ski Jumping Large Hill.
