Chain Chomp Romp is a Boss minigame in Mario Party 9. In "Solo" mode, Chain Chomp was introduced by Bowser in Magma Mine. In Party Mode, it can show up at the boss gate, being guaranteed to show up in Magma Mine with its likelihood of showing up on other boards barring Bowser Station being 50%.

Introduction[]

The players are shown at the south end of a set of tracks, four of which lead to cannons. At the north end is the Chain Chomp that serves as the boss. It romps, with its romping shaking the ground, followed by two volcanoes in the background erupting.

Gameplay[]

The player must carefully examine the rails that lead to the desired cannon. Achieving the regular cannon is worth one point, the gold cannon is worth three points and choosing the track that leads to the Chain Chomp forces the player to lose one point.

The first round prior to Chain Chomp loses half of its health will start with four regular cannons. The second round and incoming rounds will have a gold cannon prior to Chain Chomp losing half of its health. After it loses half of its health, three paths will lead to the cannons while the other two paths lead to the Chain Chomp's lair. If there are four players playing, one of the players path will always lead to the Chain Chom's lair. The Chain Chomp has 20 hit points total.

Ending[]

The Chain Chomp is blown back by the final attack. Its stake is pulled out of the ground by the sudden push back, and it flies away, revealing several Mini Stars in Party Mode and Solo Mode. The volcanoes then erupt once more.

Controls[]

  • Rules: "Watch the tracks, and choose a mine cart that will lead you to a cannon. Don't let your rivals get to the good carts before you! Gold cannons are worth three points, iron cannons are worth one."
  • Controls: "Hold the Wii Remote sideways. Press +Control Pad, A Button, B Button, One Button, or Two Button to select a mine cart."

Behind the Scenes[]

This minigame's gameplay is inspired by the Japanese puzzle game amidakuji.

Trivia[]

  • Due to two of the tracks leading to the Chain Chomp's lair after it loses half its stamina, the four player version of this minigame is the only minigame that cannot end without at least one of the player characters getting hurt.
