Stages, locations, or levels with a winter theme are areas that take place in the cold, with icy or snowy conditions. It is one of the many reoccurring themes in the Mario franchise.

Winter-themed stages feature a lot of ice and snow, making progress tedious at times. Winter-themed stages usually come late in a game and are sometimes the penultimate stages before the final themed level (which is usually fire themed). Items or objects that are frozen in ice and need to be melted are also common features in winter-themed stages.

The enemies are often bundled up for the cold or made of ice or snow themselves. Certain characters may also live in winter-themed areas (such as the penguins in Paper Mario).
