World 1-2 (Piranha Plants, Super Mario Bros.)

World 1-2 from Super Mario Bros. is a good example of an underground-themed stage.

Stages, levels, or locations with an underground theme are areas that take place underground. It is one of the one of the most common reoccurring themes in the Mario franchise.

Other Traits and Features[]

As the name suggests, underground-themed stages take place under certain levels and areas. Underground stages usually follow other types of stages, most notably plains-themed stages, and in most cases an underground-themed stage will start off plains-themed until the player enters a Warp Pipe. Underground-themed stages can also be combined with almost all other types of stages, with the exception of sky-themed stages for obivious reasons.

Underground-themed stages offer an assortment of enemies but some of the most common ones are Buzzy Beetles, which cannot be harmed by fireballs thrown by Fire Mario. Other common enemies, such as Goombas, Koopa Troopas and Piranha Plants are also found very regularly in underground-themed stages.

Almost any type of hazard can occur within underground-themed stages, though the most common hazards are, as is the case with many other stage themes, bottomless pits. The player usually has to jump over these in order to get from platform to platform.

A subtype of underground occasionally seen is sewer-themed levels, which are a more urban, less natural type of underground.
