Stages, levels, and locations with a space theme are areas that take place in outer space. It is one of the many reoccurring themes in the Mario franchise.
Other Traits and Features[]
Being set in outer space, there is no oxygen or gravity in most space-themed stages. However, in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario is able to breathe in space without a helmet, while in Super Paper Mario, he needs one. It has been stated that the Crystal Stars were protecting Mario in The Thousand-Year Door, which may explain his lack of a helmet in said game. Another notable feature of space-themed stages is that they are often large areas that seem to have no end.
Space serves as the main setting for Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 and is also the main setting for Chapter 4 of Super Paper Mario.
There are a wide variety of enemies in space-themed levels, including those that resemble aliens. The X-Nauts from The Thousand-Year Door are aliens themselves and even live on the moon itself. The most common hazards in space-themed stages are black holes, which are most prominent in the Super Mario Galaxy series, where landing in one results in an instant death.
