Stages, locations, or levels with a fire theme take place in an area surrounded by lots of lava or fire. It is one of the many reoccurring themes in the Mario franchise.

A few fire-themed levels take place inside a volcano. Fire-themed levels tend to include fire-themed enemies too, such as Podoboos, Blarggs and Li'l Cinders.

As stated above, one of the most obvious hazards of fire-themed levels is lava. In most Mario games, the player will either get knocked out or take damage for as long as possible while in the lava. However, in other games (mainly the 2D platformers), landing in the lava will result in a lost life. Many castle-themed stages are fire-themed, often featuring lava and Fire Bars. Fire-themed levels are also commonly associated with industrial-themed stages, and on rare occasions fire-themed levels will share levels with their opposite theme, the winter theme.
