Castles are a type of location in the Mario franchise since Super Mario Bros.. A castle is traditionally inhabited by a royal family or group ruling over a kingdom, such Princess Peach, who lives in her castle within the Mushroom Kingdom, and Prince Florian who lives in his castle in the Flower Kingdom.
Most castles in Mario and related media are owned by villains, notably Bowser's Castle, where Bowser and several members of the Koopa Troop live. Most Super Mario series games feature castles as a type of level found at the end of each world and has a boss for Mario or another character to fight at the end.
In Super Mario Bros., the exterior of castles show that they are made up of the same brown bricks as fortresses. A castle is seen after the Flag Pole in the third level of each world, as a castle is the fourth and final level of a world.
In the New Super Mario Bros. seires, castles are mainly final levels of all the worlds, where a boss awaits, but without a flag pole in front of them, before entering one.
