"Ready for Adventure!"
—Captain Toad, Super Mario 3D World, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Captain Toad (also known as the Toad Brigade Captain) Appeared in Super Mario Galaxy and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. He is one of Toad's outfits in which he is the leader of the Toad Brigade.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Captain Toad has a red spotted cap. In his debut appearance in Super Mario Galaxy, he wears a generic red Toad outfit, with a red vest with gold piping, white pants, and small brown shoes. He wears a headlamp on his cap and a large brown backpack with a bed roll strapped on top.

His outfit received a redesign for Super Mario 3D World. Along with his trademark headlamp and backpack, he now sports a sleeveless khaki shirt and pants secured with a brown belt, red bandana, and red shoes.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Galaxy[]

Captain Toad is one of the few to escape the attack of Peach's Castle, with the group of the Toad Brigade and Luigi. After Mario finds Captain Toad at Honeyhive Galaxy, the Toad Brigade boards the Comet Observatory with Mario, where they reveal Mario's name to Rosalina. The crew then builds the Starshroom and proceeds to join Mario in his travels through several galaxies to help him recover the Power Stars. Captain Toad is often quick to leave the sign of danger, leaving his crew to be frozen at Space Junk Galaxy.

After Mario and Luigi defeat Bowser and collect all of the Power Stars, it is revealed that the Toad Brigade received a promotion to royal guards, with Captain Toad being made the captain of the guard.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Captain Toad escapes the attack on Peach's Castle again, and builds a Starshroom with his brigade and a Luma. Mario eventually finds him on Spin-Dig Galaxy, where the captain alerts Mario of the nearby presence of Digga-Leg. Unlike the previous game, Captain Toad does not seem to recognize Mario or any of their friends during his introduction.

The brigade soon joins Starship Mario, and helps Mario throughout his adventures. Captain Toad occasionally finds Power Stars on his own, and will give them to Mario or Luigi when they find him. After Mario and Luigi defeat Bowser, the Toad Brigade returns to the Mushroom Kingdom, where they celebrate with the others around Peach's giant cake.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Captain Toad is the playable character in some of his own courses, known as The Adventures of Captain Toad, in which the player uses the Wii U GamePad (in the original game) to rotate a camera around a 3D/isometric map while maneuvering Captain Toad, who cannot jump, around the play area to collect up to five Green Power Stars.

Captain Toad can also be found in main level, usually in peril, so if the player rescues Captain Toad, he gives them a Green Power Star.

In Bowser's Fury, Captain Toad, Toadette, and their brigade supported Mario and Bowser Jr. on dealing with Fury Bowser in Lake Lapcat.

Super Mario Maker[]

Captain Toad appears as a costume Mario can wear upon completing the level Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Somewhat ironically, Mario is able to jump like normal while wearing this costume. When the player holds up on the D-Pad, Captain Toad will hold up a Power Star, similar to what he does in his own game.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Captain Toad makes his fifth appearance. Captain Toad is a hidden character in 14 different kingdoms, such as New Donk City. Once Mario discovers Captain Toad, he gives him a Power Moon. The locations where Captain Toad ranges from areas in plain sight to hidden areas behind walls, underwater, or high into the sky. At the post end credits, Toad is seen clapping hands alongside his partner captain Toadette.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder / Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park[]

Similarly to Super Mario Odyssey, Captain Toad appears in different worlds of the Flower Kingdom, and if he is found, the player receives 50 Purple Coins. He does not appear to recognize the playable characters (especially towards Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toadette), similarly to Super Mario Galaxy 2 with Mario.

In the switch 2 edition content, Captain Toad apears with his own story content with a poplin who wears a backpack and a headlamp similar as him.

In other media.[]

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[]

Captain Toad makes his fourth appearance and first starring role. Early in the story, Captain Toad ascends a temple with Captain Toadette to retrieve a Power Star, although both of them are ambushed by a giant bird named Wingo, who steals the Star. From the attack, Captain Toad is knocked to the ground, while Captain Toadette is carried away along with the Power Star. Determined to rescue her and reclaim the stolen Power Star, Toad embarks on multiple missions.

In the first act of the game, Captain Toad is tasked to find Power Stars throughout levels as he searches for his arch-nemesis, Wingo.

In the second act of the game, Wingo captures Captain Toad, leaving Toadette to be the one to rescue him.

In the final act, Toadette is recaptured, having Captain Toad rescue her once more. Once Wingo has been defeated, Captain Toad and Toadette ride a minecart all the way to Princess Peach's Castle, where just after the ride, Captain Toad spots a Green Star flying towards where Mario and his friends first discover a Clear Pipe. Captain Toad follows the Green Star, which happens to fall into the Clear Pipe that leads to the Sprixie Kingdom, and he himselfs clumsily falls into the Clear Pipe, and begins his adventure in Super Mario 3D World. In the end of the Nintendo Switch port, after arriving someplace else, Captain Toad spots the Odyssey ship that Mario and Cappy were on board, and follow it, thus begins his new adventures in Super Mario Odyssey.

In the DLC adventure on the Nintendo Switch port, Captain Toad, Captain Toadette, and their brigade retrive the Super Crown, and returns to Peach's castle, with the crown in their minecart.

Captain Toad was added to Mario Kart Tour along with Captain Toadette (called "Toadette (Explorer)" in-game). The Exploration Tour (2020), in which they got added, also added Nabbit. Captain Toads special item is the hammer.

In Mario Kart World[]

In Mario Kart World Captain Toad's outift is redesigned as explorer Toad, adjusting his outfit to Blue and a headlamp mounted on his mushroom head, Similair to Toadette's updated explorer outfit.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[]

Captain Toad wears heavy insipration within the movie as Toad where he carries a backpack, loves exploring and has the jingle theme when he introduces himself to Mario and in the end credits of the movie. Trivia[]

  • In Super Mario 3D World and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Captain Toad will make a failed attempt to jump when one of the jump buttons are pressed.
  • Interestingly, Captain Toad is actually quite athletic, being able to wall jump and perform other advanced tactics, as shown by the brigade's dialogue when Captain Toad chases The Chimp in Fluffy Bluff Galaxy. However, he is not seen performing these actions in later games, due to his heavy backpack weighing him down significantly.
  • Captain Toad is also a skilled mechanic, as seen in the Galaxy games where he is able to fix the Starshroom.
  • Despite their similar appearances, Captain Toad and Toad were once thought to be the same character. The Prima Games guide initially stated they were one and the same, but this was later officially debunked[2]. Nevertheless, Nintendo has continued to blur the distinction: Toad is referred to as 'Captain' in Super Mario Maker[3], receives Captain Toad’s theme in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[4], and in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Toad resembles Captain Toad with his complete backpack and similar personality alongside the theme music which referers them once more, implying to be the same characters with the japanse mini pamphlet stating that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is referred as the first 3D mario game for Toad.
  • In Mario Kart Tour, the Captain can perform jump trick animations despite his heavy backpack and their normal tricks are also the same as regular Toad's trick performance.
