Cap Block

Cap Blocks are a type of block featured in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. The most recurring type of Cap Block is the Metal Box (originally named Green Block), which appears as an item throughout the Super Smash Bros. series.

In Super Mario 64[]

In Super Mario 64, the Cap Blocks come in red, green, and blue colors, and hold the Wing Cap, Metal Cap and Vanish Cap respectively. They cannot be used at first because Mario has to activate the corresponding Cap Switch. The Cap Blocks with a Wing Cap are named Red Blocks, and their corresponding Cap Switch is at the Tower of the Wing Cap. The Cap Blocks with a Metal Cap are named Green Block, and its corresponding Cap Switch is found in the Cavern of the Metal Cap within Hazy Maze Cave.

In Super Mario 64 DS[]

The Red, Green, and Blue Blocks are all replaced with red ? Blocks, which contain a Power Flower or, in some cases, a Wing Cap, which is only usable by Mario. All ? Blocks become usable upon activating the single Cap Switch in the Tower of the Wing Cap.
