Super Mario

Cages are recurring objects in the Super Mario series. They first appear in Super Mario Galaxy.

Description[]

Despite their name, Cages usually resemble cloche domes, although in Bowser's Fury, they more closely resemble regular cages by appearing as birdcage-like cat baskets made of iron. A cage usually has an item inside, such as a power-up item, or sometimes the game's main collectible item, such as a Power Star. A Cage's contents do not become accessible after completing a certain task, such as by obtaining the corresponding Key. Unlocking a Cage can be essential to progressing further into an area or for completing a mission.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Galaxy[]

Cages usually contain a pipe or a Luma that transforms into a Launch Star after being freed, so by unlocking a cage, Mario or Luigi can progress further into a level. In some instances, a Cage contains a Power Star or even a Grand Star. In many galaxies, Mario or Luigi are required to find a key on the same planet as the Cage, which instantly disappears once the key is collected. Some Cages are encircled by electric rails, which must be disengaged for the cages to disappear.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Cages have a very similar role as in Super Mario Galaxy, but more commonly contain Power Stars and Grand Stars. Cosmic Cove Galaxy has a cage that is unique for covering a diggable water spout.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Four Moon Cages, as they are called, appear in the Seaside Kingdom during The Glass Is Half Empty! mission. For the mission, collecting a nearby Power Moon causes a cage to fall away and grant Mario access to the ground-pound switch it covered. There is also a Moon Cage in the Luncheon Kingdom that contains a Power Moon.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Bowser's Fury)[]

Cat Cage BF

Every Cage contains a Cat Shine. They are impervious to all attacks, including those from Fury Bowser, and can be destroyed only by opening it with a collected key. If Mario or Bowser Jr. attacks a cage, it only shakes slightly. Cages appear near the entrances of Scamper Shores, Pounce Bounce Isle, Slipskate Slope, Pipe Path Tower, and Roiling Roller Isle, when the mission Key to the Cat Shine is available on each island. Mario can obtain a Cat Shine inside of a Cage by finding a nearby key and taking it to the Cage. When the key touches the keyhole, a short cutscene of the key opening the Cage is shown, allowing Mario to collect the Cat Shine inside. After an island's "Key to the Cat Shine" mission has been completed, if Mario leaves and returns, the cage is no longer present.
