A Cactus (plural: Cacti) is a real-world prickly plant often found in desert areas. Their first appearance in a Mario game is Super Mario Bros. 2, carried over from Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. Pokeys and their variants are designed after cacti.

Cacti appear as platforms in some of the desert levels. Although cacti are prickly, neither Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, nor Toad take damage from standing on one.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[]
Cacti are featured as obstacles in Slipsand Galaxy, during the mission Sailing the Sandy Seas, where they appear throughout the trail on the Sandy Sea Planet. Whenever the Sand Bird touches a Cactus, the parts that touched it are temporarily broken off.
In Mario Kart series[]

Cacti are hazards found in several desert-themed courses throughout the series. Cacti are among the hazards to hinder the movements of anyone who drives into them.
Cacti make their series debut in Mario Kart 64, in which they appear in Kalimari Desert. They are retained in the course's reappearances in Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart Tour, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass (Wave 2).
Cacti make their second appearance in Mario Kart: Super Circuit, where they appear in two courses: Sunset Wilds and Yoshi Desert, the former returning in Mario Kart Tour.
The third Mario Kart game in which Cacti appear is Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, in which they appear in Dry Dry Desert, and are retained in the course's reappearance in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
In Mario Kart Wii, Cacti make their fourth appearance, and are located in both Dry Dry Ruins and Thwomp Desert.
There is a kart designed after a cactus named Cact-X, which first appears in Mario Kart 7.
