Mario Kart

Buses are a recurring traffic obstacle in the Mario Kart series. They first appear in Mario Kart 64.

Description[]

Buses are typically found in courses that take place at busy highways. If a character drives their kart into a bus, they spin out, as if they had drove into a Banana Peel on the road. Like with other traffic vehicles, buses can neither be destroyed nor removed, although they can be launched into the air from certain items, most commonly a Super Star or, as of Mario Kart DS, a Bullet Bill. Like other traffic vehicles, most buses do not show who drives them, although hitting a certain bus causes it to make the sound of a honking horn.

The Buses all typically bear a similar shape, although London Loop in both Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe features a double-decker bus like those from real-world London.

In Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart 64[]

Buses are exclusively featured in Toad's Turnpike. According to the game's Japanese website, they are driven by Ukikis, and a silhouette of them can be seen on the side of the bus. The doors on the bus are on the left-hand side indicating they drive on the left as done in real life in various countries such as Japan, India, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![]

Buses are found in two courses, Mushroom Bridge and Mushroom City. Aside from using a Super Star, a Bus can also be flipped if hit by either a Bowser's Shell or a Chain Chomp. If a bus is lifted into the air, it stops moving, whereas in future games, the bus continues to move even in the air. In this game only, if a player hits a bus, they will spin out and not lose their item.

Two kinds of buses apper in the game. One of the buses is blue and features Star Travel logos on the back and sides, and also has the company's name on the front of the bus. The number plate features the letters "STR". The other bus is deep maroon and pale pink, includes Peach Beach logos in the place of the Star Travel ones, and its number plate instead reads "SUN". Unlike the previous game, the doors on the bus are on the right-hand side as done in the Continental Americas or Mainland Europe..

Mario Kart DS[]

Buses are introduced in Shroom Ridge, and they also appear in the returning GCN Mushroom Bridge. Every bus resembles a standard blue city bus with red and yellow zig-zags along the sides. They are loosly based of a 1990s Fiat 418 Portesi bus. The doors on the bus are on the left-hand side mainly because on Shroom Ridge traffic drives on the left. However on Mushroom Bridge, vehicles on the left lane travel slightly faster then those on the right lane. Though in reality it is actually vice versa.

Mario Kart 8[]

Buses also appear on the retro tracks N64 Toad's Turnpike in Mario Kart 8 as well as DS Shroom Ridge and Tour Berlin Byways in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The buses on N64 Toad's Turnpike can display different sponsors at random, namely Galaxy Air, Boomerang Bros. International Airlines, Paratroopa Airlines, as well as a Toad City Sightseeing, a sponsor which only appears on these buses. Buses on the other aforementioned courses always display Galaxy Air designs. If a player hits a bus, they will not lose their item, and if they were not driving fast enough they will not flip out either. On N64 Toad's Turnpike only, some buses also include ramps on the roof which can be accessed after using a dash panel ramp truck. The buses in this game resemble coach buses rather than city buses in the previous game and they are based on a 2005 Hino S'elega Generation 2 Coach.
