Super Mario Mario & Luigi

For information about Bully Koopa from the cartoons, see Roy Koopa.

A Bully (どんけつ / ドンケツ Donketsu?, Bonk butt) is an enemy in a few Mario games. They first appear in Super Mario 64, and have since mostly appeared in the Super Mario series and sometimes the Mario & Luigi series.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

In Super Mario 64, a Bully has a black spherical body and yellow horns and round, green feet. Since Super Mario 3D World, Bullies have been redesigned to have a navy blue body, metallic gold horns, red eyes, and dark green shoes. They are now taller than Mario, essentially becoming the same height as Big Bully. Bullies have pupils that are larger, rounder, and placed together. They have new pot-like shapes with a rimmed bottom. Bullies have larger feet, and their stubbier horns are horizontally placed on the sides of their heads

Behavior[]

A Bully is usually found on a platform. If a Bully notices Mario or another playable character, it tries to push the victim off the platform, usually causing the playable character to fall into a hazard, such as lava. A Bully is largely durable, and it can only be defeated by pushing it off its own platform. Bullies sometimes guard items such as Power Stars, and defeating a Bully or a group of them is usually required to obtain the item.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario 64[]

BullyDS

Bullies charge (and miss) at Mario.

Bullies are encountered in Lethal Lava Land and Bowser in the Fire Sea. Whenever Mario approaches a Bully, it always moves in his direction, attempting to knock Mario into the lava. Bullies are durable but can still be defeated by knocking them into lava, either by jumping on, kicking, punching or diving at them. While in his Metal form, Mario cannot be pushed back by a Bully.

A larger variant of Bullies named Big Bullies are also encountered in Lethal Lava Land. Aside from being a larger size, Big Bullies have the same appearance as a Bully. The course's second mission, Bully the Bullies, involves Mario having to defeat three Bullies before he can fight a Big Bully. There is a Bully made up of ice, the Chill Bully, which is encountered in Snowman's Land.

Super Mario 64 DS[]

Bullies retain the same role as before. Yoshi can only push back a Bully by Ground Pounding it. They now also appear in the newly added Chief Chilly Challenge, alongside their leader Chief Chilly, who was responsible for imprisoning Wario.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Spooky Seaside Wreck Bullies

Bullies charging around Mario in Super Mario 3D World.

Bullies return as enemies. They appear in several levels such as Gigantic Seasick Wreck, Boiling Blue Bully Belt, and Broken Blue Bully Belt. In this game, they behave as they did previously and are immune to virtually any attack. They will once again try to charge at Mario or his allies and knock them off edges.

Bullies can be beaten by knocking them down a pit or into lava. This can be done by either stomping it or from the effects of either a Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Lucky Bell, Super Bell, Boomerang Flower, or Rosalina's Star Spin. If a playable character is under the invincibility effects of either a Starman, Invincibility Leaf, or Invincibility Bell, they can automatically knock back a Bully just from touching it, therefore making it easier to knock them off the edge. Defeating a group of Bullies is sometimes required because doing this opens the path forward or reveals a hidden Green Star.

In the Bowser's Fury side of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Bullies have a variant named Cat Bullies, which have very similar behavior. Cat Bullies are often seen guarding Cat Shines.

Super Mario Maker 2[]

Bully Charge

A Bully charging at Mario, two Podoboos can be seen flying nearby.

This is the first time a Bully appears in a 2D Super Mario platformer. They are placeable enemies in Course Maker, but are exclusive to the Super Mario 3D World style. A Bully can be given a Super Mushroom to become a Big Bully or wings to become a Winged Bully. Just as before, Bullies are invulnerable to attacks, and they can only be defeated by knocking them off the platform. The effects of a Fire Flower can be used to push a Bully back within a range and the effects of a Starman can be used to knock a Bully back much easier.

In Mario Kart DS[]

Although regular Bullies do not appear, Big Bully returns as a boss in Level 1 of the game's Mission Mode.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]

Bully Discovery

A Bully as seen in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam.

Bullies are encountered as enemies on Mount Brrr. Here, they attack by charging, which can be countered either by using a Hammer on them or jumping over them. In another attack by the Bullies, bombs will appear behind the bros. and Paper Mario, and they must jump on the Bully while it is charging in order to not get pushed into the bombs. If Paper Mario takes a successful leap over the Bully while it is charging, it will run into the bombs, causing it to explode and take damage.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[]

Bully G-Force Top Secret Agent Data

A Bully as seen in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey.

Bullies appear in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey campaign as recruitable allies. In this mode, they are classed as melee troopers and attack by charging at the enemy. Their Special Skill is Smack Back Attack, due to their larger size, deploying several Bullies when going up against many Ranged Enemies is a good strategy.

In computer software[]

Mario Net Quest[]

Bullies appear in the Adobe Shockwave game Mario Net Quest, as one of the objects the player must avoid clicking on. If a Bully is clicked on, the player loses 500 points.
