"Brooklyn Bound" is the twelfth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!.

Synopsis[]

Koopa Khan (the alias taken on by King Koopa during the episode) has been chasing the Mario Bros. and their companions for days. After the group gets caught up in a windy storm in the Snow World, Luigi complains that he is fed up with the Mushroom World and wishes to return to Brooklyn, and Mario agrees with him. At this point, Koopa Khan catches up with them and chases them into a cave. Inside, Luigi stupidly pulls a switch that causes a pit to open up beneath them. Koopa Khan walks off, confident that his adversaries have been finished off.

Fortunately, the good guys land in a cavern filled with well-constructed pipes. There, they meet Salvador Drainado, a master plumber from Brooklyn who has also been trapped in the Mushroom World (for thirteen years, according to him). Drainado tells them that he has found a drainpipe that will bring him back to Brooklyn, and the Marios jump at the chance to help him find it. After helping Drainado clear away a wall blocking their path, the group crosses over a chasm where molten lava flows at the bottom. However, Koopa Khan, having learned the Mario group survived, shows up and blows up their bridge using a Bob-omb. However, the good guys grab onto a ledge while falling down, and in an example of Deus Ex Machina, Mario airlifts them back up by powering up with a Fire Flower.

Just as they reach the Last Drainpipe to Brooklyn, the Mario Bros. reconsider returning to Brooklyn, but Princess Toadstool insists they go. Just when they're about ready, Koopa Khan reappears and captures Princess Toadstool and Toad. Mario immediately bolts out of the drainpipe, and Luigi goes with him, so only Drainado returns to Brooklyn. In the meantime, the Marios rescue their friends from Bowser once again.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • In a rare instance of inter-episode continuity on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, "Plumbers Academy" reveals that Drainado had founded a plumbing academy attended by Mario and Luigi.
  • In this episode, Mario gains the ability to fly after grabbing the Fire Flower, something that never occurs in any Mario game.
  • Although Drainado claims that the drainpipe will be the Mario Bros.' only chance to return to Brooklyn, this is later contradicted by the episode "Flatbush Koopa", where the Marios do indeed return to Brooklyn, as well as several episodes of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 where the characters frequently made visits to Earth.
  • In a segment in the episode, Mario's mouth is moving when Drainado talks.
