Brooklyn is a borough of the greater city of New York, and is located in the United States of America. It is the actual hometown to Mario and Luigi were born in the TV shows and movies, such as the DiC cartoons and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The first in-game appearance of Brooklyn was in Mario's Time Machine. It is also mentioned in many biographies that Mario lives in Brooklyn.

Description[]

Brooklyn is the largest of New York City's five Boroughs. Its history can be traced as far back to the American Revolution. Most of the City played important roles in New York's politics. The population of Brooklyn is estimated to be around 2,000,000 according to the 2014 census. Around the 1850's Brooklyn was one of the largest cities in The United States besides New York City. Immigrants of all nationalities poured into Brooklyn doubling its population and around the surrounding towns. The city was incredibly crowded with immigrants which was causing turmoil for infrastructure. The Brooklyn Bridge, built in 1883, massively relieved congestion for the growing city. The city of Brooklyn was turned into a Borough in 1898 and was absorbed into Kings County some time later. It is under the leadership of New York City Charter. Brooklyn has grown to be a diverse, multicultural area of New York City with some of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the world.

In the games[]

In the games, the sewers of New York was established as the setting of Mario Bros. where Italian immigrants Mario and Luigi work in as plumbers.[2][3][4] Super Mario 64 specifies that Mario has an Italian accent because he is a first generation Italian in Brooklyn.[5][6] Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island depicts the two brothers being delivered by storks to the Mushroom Kingdom as babies and states that their father and mother are in the Mushroom Kingdom as well.[7] Yoshi's Island DS, Yoshi's New Island and in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time also confirm the Mushroom Kingdom to be the brother's original homeland, while also stating that Mario and Luigi are Italians,[8] before the events of Mario Bros. in New York.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[]

Brooklyn makes a major appearance, serving as one of the main settings of the movie. Much like in the television shows, Brooklyn serves as the home of origin for Mario and Luigi. In the movie, Mario and Luigi live a decent life in Brooklyn where they started up their own plumbing service upon leaving their previous jobs of being construction men. Mario and Luigi set up their own commercial hoping to drive in customers, but nearly everyone except for their mother find the commercial uninspiring. Mario and Luigi eventually find work to fix a minor leak for a couple, but things go awry when a hostile dog caused their business to fail at that point. After going back home, Mario is insulted by his father when he tells him that Mario is holding back Luigi. Luigi comforts Mario assuring him that he isn't holding him back, but Mario then says that he still wishes he can do something better with his life. Mario then spots a news report about a mass leak in Brooklyn itself and is fueled by the desire to save all of Brooklyn itself.

Mario and Luigi eventually make it to the deepest part of the sewers in order to fix the leak, but they both fail and end up in an even lower part where they both comment that they didn't know about that. Upon investigating the dark room, Luigi accidently stumbles down a strange pipe that would eventually lead both him and Mario from Brooklyn and into the Dark Land for Luigi and the Mushroom Kingdom for Mario. Brooklyn itself isn't seen again until the very climax of the film where all of the major characters are dragged into it after Mario sends a Banzai Bill down the same pipe that leads back to Brooklyn. Bowser then engages all of the heroes in the final battle with him nearly beating Mario to near-death. Mario and Luigi eventually managed to use the Super Star to power themselves up and defeat Bowser saving all of Brooklyn. Even Foreman Spike cheered for the Mario Bros. after previously taunting and bullying them lead by the crowd as well. Despite finally feeling accomplished in Brooklyn, Mario and Luigi decided to stay in the Mushroom Kingdom where they would continue to do their plumbing business.
