Brick Blocks (sometimes simply known as a Brick) are blocks that appear to be constructed of bricks. They appear in a number of games in the Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Land series, in which they are breakable only as Super Mario and award the player 50 points. They are colored brown or blue depending on whether the player is over — or underground.
Some brick blocks have items hidden in them. If they do, them the item will come out no matter what state Mario is in. Some brick blocks have coins, while others have power-ups (such as Stars and Mushrooms), 1-up Mushrooms, and Vines.
According to the instruction booklet for Super Mario Bros., it is said that Brick Blocks appear everywhere because Bowser turned the residents of Mushroom Kingdom into Brick Blocks.
Appearances
Brick Blocks have reappeared many times and are often seen throughout the Mario series.
They appeared in Super Mario Sunshine, though they were filled with sand rather than coins.
Brick Blocks appear again in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
In New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Brick Blocks reappear, now being able to be Ground Pounded. Some of these contain 10 coins. If Mario, as Super Mario ground pounds these blocks and then stays in the ground pound form, several coins come out. If not in the Super Mario form, only one coin comes out at a time. If Mario manages to get all 10 coins, a Mushroom comes out.
Brick Blocks also appear in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games as an object in the Dream Snowball Fight event.
Brick Blocks reappear again in Super Mario 3D Land and reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U. In New Super Mario Bros. 2, If Mario gets all 10 coins from a brick block, it turns into a Gold Brick.
Brick Blocks never appeared in Super Mario World. Instead, they were replaced with Rotating Blocks.
Brick Blocks also appeared in the Paper Mario series.
They've appeared in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. There are the small ones that contain items or gear and can be broken with a punch or by using the hammer, and the large ones that are empty.
