Brick Blocks (sometimes simply known as a Brick or Block) are one of the main types of blocks featured in the Mario franchise. They primarily appear in the Super Mario series, especially the 2D titles, and first appear in Super Mario Bros..
Brick Blocks are colored brown, and are named for the fact that they resemble a brick wall. Mario or another character cannot break a Brick Block while in their Small form, as jumping up to it only pushes the Brick Block upward for about one second. If a character is in their Super form or a further powered-up form, such as Fire, they can jump beneath a Brick Block to break it.
Certain Brick Blocks yield an item, such as a coin, but sometimes a power-up such as a Starman, a Super Mushroom, or a 1-Up Mushroom. Some Brick Blocks even contain a Vine within them which leads up to a secret area, such as a Coin Heaven. These Brick Blocks function the same as the various Question Blocks, and they even become an Empty Block after being jumped at.
There are specific types of Brick Blocks named Coin Blocks that yield a lot of coins, and they have the exact same appearance as a Brick Block.
In outdoor levels, Brick Blocks are the usual brown color, but are blue in underground areas and gray in castle levels, a result of the Nintendo Entertainment System's palette limitations. Destroying a Brick Block yields 50 points.
In the instruction booklet, it is said that Brick Blocks are everywhere because Bowser turned the residents of Mushroom Kingdom into Brick Blocks.
Brick Blocks retain their functionality from Super Mario Bros., but their sprites were updated slightly. Brick Blocks are still differently colored depending on their location. depending on where they are located: brown in outdoor level, blue in underground levels, and gray in castle levels.
Brick Blocks retain their functionality from Super Mario Bros.. Giant Land features Mega Blocks, which are giant Brick Blocks that, aside from having a larger appearance, function the same as regular-sized Brick Blocks.
Brick Blocks are found in secret courses. They are much larger than in previous Super Mario games, being about the size of about a Mega Block from Super Mario Bros. 3, but these Brick Blocks are filled with sand inside. Certain Brick Blocks contain a 1-Up Mushroom.
This is the first 3D Super Mario game in which Brick Blocks act like they do in the 2D installments. There are enemies named Fake Blocks, which disguise themselves as regular Brick Blocks and reveal themselves when Mario or Luigi get near.
Brick Blocks are found on the field, where Mario can break them by either jumping beneath them or by using his hammer. Some ? Blocks are disguised as Brick Blocks.
Three rows of Brick Blocks appear in the coin minigame Coin Cache. These rows repeatedly move either left or right. Some Brick Blocks are empty and break when jumped at, while others yield a coin if jumped at. Some of the blocks are actually Coin Blocks with the appearance of a Brick Block.
The minigame Growing Up involves each player having to try and grow the largest vine from their Brick Block. In each turn, the player has to press whichever button is displayed on a roulette. If the correct button is pressed, a vine sprouts from the Brick Block, but a player's character does not hit the Brick Block if the wrong button is pressed. Each time the Brick Block is hit, the vine grows increasingly taller, up until the ending.
Brick Blocks come in two sizes on the overworld. There are the small ones that contain items or gear, and they can be broken by either Mario or Luigi's hammer or from Bowser's punch. The larger Brick Blocks are empty, and tend to block off paths.
