Breakable blocks are a type of object with a few appearances in Mario-related games. Breakable blocks make their first Mario-related appearance in Alleyway.

Description[]

Breakable blocks are rectangular objects that can be destroyed by having an object hit it, although certain breakable blocks take more hits to break than others.

In Alleyway, the object of each main stage is for the player to use the ball to break every breakable block so that they can continue on to the next stage. There are three types of breakable blocks: white blocks, gray blocks, and black blocks, worth one, two, and three points respectively. In Bonuses, the breakable blocks are arranged to resemble a character or enemy from Super Mario Bros.. Unlike regular stages, Bonuses involve the the ball passing right through the breakable blocks, and there is a time limit, meaning that the player has to instead break as many breakable blocks before time runs out.

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, breakable blocks are featured in green, yellow, and red colors. If a Yoshi hits a breakable block with an egg, it changes to the next color, specifically from green to yellow, then from yellow to red. If a Yoshi hits a breakable block while it is red, it breaks.
