Mario & Luigi

Bowser X is a boss who appears in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. In the former, he is the ultimate boss of The Gauntlet as the strongest enemy in the game, and in the latter he's a stronger form of Bowser and Antasma, fought in the Battle Ring.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story[]

Bowser X is the final boss in The Gauntlet. As the final enemy of Class 7, you must fight Durmite X, Alpha Cretin X, Wisdurm X, the Bowser Memory MX & LX, Junker X, and the Dark Star X before you get the chance to fight him. Bowser X has incredibly high HP, POW and DEF, meaning he's not going down without one hard-fought battle. He is also immune to all statuses, including POW & DEF Down.

Attacks[]

  • Punch: Bowser X throws a punch at one of the Bros., dealing high damage. He can occasionally exhale air from his nose, signaling a fake out attack that instead causes him to leap into the air.
  • Flame Breath: Bowser X takes time to charge up a very powerful fire breath attack that cannot be avoided normally. To avoid it, the Bros. must grab onto Starlow to avoid the attack. The breath has a chance to inflict Burn if the brother isn't burnt to a crisp by the end of the attack.
  • Goomba Storm: Bowser X pulls out a ball of Goombas and signals them to attack the Bros.. The Goombas will charge at one of the two Bros, dealing medium damage per hit. Bowser X may also breath fire, causing the Goombas to fly into the sky. Once all the Goombas are finished chaging, all the skyborne Goombas come crashing back down, dealing high damage if they hit and can cause Burn. They can be countered with the Hammer, which sends the Goomba into Bowser X, dealing damage to him.
  • Shy Guy Squad: Bowser X throws out a ball of Shy Guys before subsequently rolling into a ball himself. The Shy Guys then push him into a slingshot to catapult them into the Bros., this deals very high damage if it hits. To avoid the attack, you must use the Hammer and counter Bowser X multiple times until the slingshot breaks.
  • Fire Breath + Fireball: Bowser X spits out small fire breaths at the Bros, dealing medium damage if they hit and possibly causing Burn. Countering the fire back at Bowser X with the Hammer causes him to ignite, he then curls into a ball and launches himself up at the ceiling, bouncing off the walls while dropping small fires that have to be countered with the Hammer. After a while, the flames cool down and Bowser X launches down onto one of the Bros., dealing very high damage with a high chance of inflicting Dizzy. You have to hit Bowser X with the Hammer, but be careful as he'll attempt to strike the other brother after he hits or gets hit. Bowser X only uses this attack after getting to around half health.
  • Giant Transformation: Bowser X suddenly grows exponentially in size, and then proceeds to spit large fireballs at the Bros.. In the original game, these were fired all over the place and have to be avoided via jumps, dealing medium damage with a Burn chance if they hit, in the remake he spits massive fireballs instead that have to be countered with the Hammer. These deal very high damage, so be sure to counter them. After he's done spitting fire, he chases after the Bros. while there's fire on the ground that have to be jumped over. The smaller fires deal less damage than the larger fires, and getting hit causes the brother be be knocked backwards, which can throw off your jump timing. Getting knocked backwards too much leads to Bowser X trampling over the brother, dealing extreme damage to them. Bowser X only uses this attack after getting to around half health.
  • Fury: Only present in the remake, once Bowser X has lost about half his health, he'll enter Fury mode, giving him a stat boost and prompting him to consume a Drumstick, which heals him for 9,999 HP.
  • Inhale: Bowser X automatically uses this every time the Bros. use a Special Attack. Bowser X will start inhaling, consuming the item used in the attack, making it temporarily unusable. Bowser X will eventually spit out the item, after 5 turns of him inhaling it have passed.

Tips[]

Because of the turn limit and limited items, it's best to go full force on Bowser X before you run out of healing or time. Using Falling Star or Jump Helmet with the Excellent!! Badge's Super Strike effect can deal heavy damage to him, and Magic Window or Spin Pipe (only in the original version) can work as well if the player is very skilled with their action commands. Mighty Meteor can also deal good damage and allow you to stock up on more items during and before the fight, but it cannot inflict POW-Down, as Bowser X is immune to all statuses.

Damage-wise, the Flame Breath and Giant Transformation attacks are the most painful, the former dealing 4 hits of very high damage, and the latter dealing ~200 damage if you get stomped on. Thankfully, these two attacks aren't incredibly hard to avoid. His Punch attack is also easy to avoid, but the rest of his attacks all hit hard and are tough to dodge. For the Shy Guy Squad attack, if you do, don't hammer with both Bros. at once, as if you do so you usually won't get enough time for the other Bro. to hammer it back in time, meaning they'll get hit for a lot of damage. The Goomba Storm can be really difficult to dodge and counter, it's made easier in the remake, but you'll need fast reactions to avoid all the Goombas. Again, don't try to hammer with both Bros. at once. The Fireball attack can very easily catch you off guard at the very end, so be prepared to counter after all the fire is dealt with.

Trivia[]

  • Bowser X is the only X boss in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story to not be a recolor of its lookalike, but has the same appearance as Bowser.
  • Bowser X has the most HP out of every enemy in the entire game, at over 7000.
  • In Dream Team's Battle Ring, rather than having Antasma X forcibly popped out of Bowser X and both subsequently retreating, they instead explode in defeat like all but two other bosses.
